Transportation Engineering Associate II (61034221)

Responsibilities

• Monitor highway and bridge construction projects (e.g., asphalt, concrete, earth-type bases, macadam, pipe, under drain, pile driving, form setting, reinforced steel, compaction with nuclear gauge, etc.).
• Oversee contractor’s productivity, utility conflicts, project scope, and other construction impacts.
• Ensure all projects maintain a safe work zone for motorists and construction personnel.
• Provide contractors and inspectors with proper installation, inspection, and maintenance instructions for erosion prevention and sediment control devices on SCDOT construction sites.
• Prepare and review field notes, material sampling reports, and final plans.
• Generate daily work reports in Site Manager and AASHTO-Ware Project, utility diaries, monthly estimate worksheets, daily asphalt roadway reports, erosion and traffic control reports, sample cards, and other necessary documentation, including cross-section area computations and volume calculations.
• Serve as the SCDOT representative to the public for construction project discussions and plan explanations.
• Interpret construction plans and contract notes for inspectors.
• Use surveying software with data collectors and total stations to verify contractor’s lines and grades.
• Compute and create volumes for borrow and waste pits.
• Supervise sampling and testing of construction materials to ensure compliance with specifications.
• Obtain material certifications as needed and maintain material samples and certification log books for projects.
• Assist the Resident Construction Engineer as required.
• Maintain all current technician certifications and obtain additional certifications as assigned.

Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management and one (1) year of engineering or construction management work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator's license.

Physical Demands

• Sitting or standing for extended periods of as part of essential job functions.
• Travel may be required.
• Physical tasks may include bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling.
• Driving and walking for extended periods, including treading rough and uneven terrain.
• Working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
• Exposure to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
• May require working outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather or departmental emergencies.
• May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
