About the role

Under the direction of the Engineering Services Branch Chief (a Senior Transportation Engineer), the incumbent performs, coordinates, and provides technical support for a broad range of North Region Project Development (NRPD) and Engineering Services Branch functions. The incumbent supports engineering quality, constructability, safety, standards, estimating, CADD/ BIM4I, project records, railroad coordination, and project delivery support activities in a customer service team setting. Assignments may vary based on branch workload and project delivery needs. The work is accomplished through understanding and applying Caltrans standards, manuals, guidelines, policies, directives, engineering judgment, and computer software applications; and through coordination with Design, Office Engineer, District Design Liaison, Project Delivery Coordinator, Permits, Right of Way, Structures, Construction, Headquarters, local agencies, utility companies, railroad companies, consultants, contractors, and the public.

Pay and classification

  • Classification: TRANSPORTATION ENGINEER (CIVIL)
  • Salary ranges:
    • Range A: $6,488.00 - $7,735.00
    • Range B: $7,428.00 - $9,296.00
    • Range C: $8,896.00 - $11,131.00
    • Range D: $9,712.00 - $12,152.00
  • New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
  • Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. For all other ranges, a PE license is not required.

Minimum qualifications

Candidates are required to review the Minimum Qualifications (MQs) for this classification. If you meet MQs under Pattern II and require the TE Civil in-person written hurdle exam, DO NOT TAKE the TE Civil online exam prior to passing the written hurdle. Candidates who take the TE Civil online exam prior to passing the written hurdle may negatively impact their hiring eligibility. Please contact the exam unit at askexams@dot.ca.gov for additional information prior to taking the online examination.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Transportation Engineering (Civil) exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions.
