About the role

Under the direction of the Transportation Supervisor, this position serves as a driver for the Transportation Department, originating in southern Leavenworth County. The vehicle for this position is in Tonganoxie, and this position originates and concludes there. Drivers operate a 7 to 20-passenger bus or ADA accessible vehicle and transport adults age 50 and over and persons with disabilities of any age in Basehor, Tonganoxie, Linwood, and surrounding areas. Drivers pick up, discharge, and assist passengers in boarding and departing. Transportation occurs throughout Leavenworth County, the Kansas City Metropolitan area, and within a 50-mile radius of Leavenworth, KS.

Responsibilities

  • Provides transportation services to residents in southern Leavenworth County (80% of time)
  • Maintains a daily maintenance log (5% of time)
  • Collects transportation fees (4% of time)
  • Maintains the cleanliness of the vehicles (6% of time)
  • Drives a 7 to 20-passenger bus and operates an ADA accessible vehicle
  • Adheres to all road safety regulations and posted signage for safe travel
  • Responds to transportation assignments in all types of weather
  • Ensures customer safety during transport
  • Transports passengers to various locations, choosing the best route and adhering to predetermined departure and arrival times
  • Assists passengers in boarding and departing the vehicle and secures occupied wheelchairs or scooters
  • Performs daily maintenance inspections (e.g., checks tires, battery, and other vehicle components)
  • Receives service requests by telephone and two-way radio
  • Maintains trip logs and prepares operating records
  • Keeps records of passengers, mileage, fuel, and oil
  • Prepares reports regarding driving hazards and incidents
  • Attends trainings and informational programs
  • All other duties as assigned (5% of time)

Requirements

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to obtain a Kansas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a passenger endorsement, if needed
  • Ability to obtain certificates in CPR and AED
  • Must pass pre-employment drug/alcohol test and KBI background check
  • High school diploma or general equivalency

Skills

  • Working knowledge of city and county roads
  • Ability to understand, follow, and communicate oral and written directions
  • Legible handwriting
  • Proficiency in using a two-way radio
  • Knowledge of defensive driving practices
  • Ability to remain calm with passengers and operate the vehicle under various road and weather conditions
  • Ability to complete maintenance logs and daily trip sheet information for statistical reporting
  • Ability to push an occupied wheelchair as defined by ADA law
  • Effective communication with co-workers, supervisors, senior citizens, and the general public
  • Ability to relate successfully to senior citizens

Physical Demands

  • Adequate vision to safely operate a vehicle
  • Ability to assist passengers, including pushing an occupied wheelchair
