About the role
HRCS needs one reliable, safety-minded person to own student transportation end to end — driving and maintaining our Ford Transit vans, setting and running the daily routes, keeping the fleet road-ready, and meeting every Colorado Department of Education (CDE) requirement. Because HRCS operates across two campuses and mountain terrain, this role keeps students moving safely between home, school, and the places learning happens. This is a hands-on, part-time role: the Transportation Director both drives and manages. They are the single owner of route logistics, fleet upkeep, accurate recordkeeping, and transportation compliance, working closely with site staff and families to keep everything running smoothly and audit-ready.
Responsibilities
- Safely drive HRCS vans on daily routes, transporting students between home and school across both campuses, including in mountain and winter driving conditions.
- Set and maintain route logistics — stops, timing, sequencing, and day-to-day adjustments — and coordinate pickup and drop-off times with partners such as the Boys & Girls Club.
- Conduct and document a pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspection before and after every route, and flag any issue promptly.
- Communicate clearly and proactively with families about routes, timing, delays, and changes.
- Coordinate and support auxiliary or substitute drivers, ensuring clear communication regarding scheduling and routes.
- Manage logs and records, assisting drivers with accurate pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspection logs and maintaining up-to-date driver files.
- Conduct annual driver tests and evaluations to ensure ongoing safety compliance with state and school standards.
- Drive and coordinate transportation for field trips, community-learning outings, and school events.
- Manage activity transportation schedules and the related permission and trip documentation, in coordination with site staff.
- Ensure transportation accommodates students whose IEPs include transportation services, in coordination with the Student Services Coordinator.
- Keep the vans maintained and road-ready: own the preventive-maintenance schedule, manage repair and service vendors, and handle routine upkeep.
- Track and maintain vehicle records, annual inspections, service history, mileage, and all required transportation metrics.
- Remove any unsafe vehicle from service until it is repaired and re-inspected.
- Keep HRCS compliant with Colorado's Rules for the Operation, Maintenance, and Inspection of School Transportation Vehicles (1 CCR 301-26) and the Minimum Standards Governing School Transportation Vehicles (1 CCR 301-25).
- Complete the CDE Mandatory New Supervisor Certification within the required timeframe and serve as HRCS's designated transportation supervisor and point of contact with CDE.
- Ensure every vehicle passes its required CDE annual inspection and that inspection, maintenance, and mileage records stay current and audit-ready.
- Maintain complete, accurate records and submit required transportation data and reports to CDE and the Charter School Institute (CSI) on time.
- Keep each driver's file complete with the required documents.
- Maintain compliance with the Protection of Persons from Restraint Act (1 CCR 301-45) and keep required restraint/seclusion training current.
- Coordinate transportation for students with IEP-required transportation services and for students experiencing homelessness under McKinney-Vento, in coordination with the Student Services Coordinator and Registrars.
- Schedule, run, and document student emergency-evacuation drills and on-board safety training.
- Complete and keep current all CDE-required operator training per the CDE Vehicle Operator License and Training Matrix, along with required physicals, background checks, and participation in the drug-and-alcohol testing program if required.
- Complete mandatory-reporter and student-confidentiality (FERPA) training, and follow and help maintain HRCS transportation safety procedures.
Qualifications
- Holds a valid Colorado driver's license with a clean driving record, and is willing and able to obtain any required endorsements.
- Is willing to complete the CDE New Supervisor Certification and all CDE-required school-transportation training and certifications.
- Is meticulous about records and compliance — comfortable owning audit-ready documentation for CDE and CSI.
- Is dependable, safety-first, and calm and warm with students and families.
- Is organized enough to manage routes, schedules, maintenance, and records without dropping details.
