Transportation Design Tech - Fort Bend/Waller Area Office

About the role

Performs basic or intermediate design work and calculations; performs field work; uses automated systems and learns specialized procedures. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects.

Responsibilities

• Performs basic design work (Tech I) or intermediate design work (Tech II).
• Performs intermediate drafting and calculations in support of design activities; accomplishes non-routine and complex assignments (Tech I).
• Performs advanced drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features (Tech II).
• Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies, and right-of-way maps.
• Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
• Uses automated programs, interactive graphics, and the Design and Construction Information System.
• Works on reproduction of plans.
• Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications (Tech II).
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

• Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent in general high school studies.
• Experience: No experience required (Tech I); 2 years drafting, design, plan preparation (Tech II). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year-per-year basis.
• Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Skills

• Basic roadway design knowledge (Tech I) or intermediate design and hand and computer-aided drafting procedures (Tech II).
• Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities.
• Higher mathematics.
• Interactive graphic and design information systems.
• Proficient skill in performing basic design and drafting (Tech I) or intermediate design and drafting (Tech II).
• Ability to use computers, applicable programs, applications and systems.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.
• Lifting—raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position.
• Talking—expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
• Hearing—perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication.
• Repetitive Motion—substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
• Close Visual Acuity—work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading.

This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical. Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
