About the role

Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering (ICE) is seeking experienced Construction Inspectors for multiple upcoming opportunities in North Carolina. These roles offer the chance to contribute to a variety of impactful infrastructure and transportation initiatives across the region.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily observation of construction activities and document activities on required reports/forms.
  • Review construction materials for contract and specification compliance.
  • Inspect roadways and structures for conformance to plans and specifications.
  • Evaluate structural materials, placement of culverts, and structural operations such as foundation excavation.
  • Monitor placement of pilings, reinforcing and structural steel, concrete, and backfill.
  • Verify lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using survey and field engineering equipment.
  • Accurately calculate and compute.
  • Sample and test construction materials to ensure they meet the quality requirements of the project specifications.
  • Review contractor submittals for conformance to project documents and specifications.
  • Document and immediately report any non-compliance actions and safety violations to your immediate supervisor.
  • Record Daily Work Reports to include quantities and an objective description of the work shift activities.

Qualifications

  • Above average math and problem-solving skills are required.
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies and quickly learn new computer skills.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in English.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Fleet drivers must possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
  • Must complete a pre-employment screening; ICE is a drug-free workplace.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • An HS diploma required or equivalent required.
  • An Associate or BS in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology is a plus.
  • Roadway and bridge inspection experience is required.
  • Experience working on NCDOT projects.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs.

Certifications and Training Requirements

  • Compensation is commensurate with the candidate's level of experience and applicable NCDOT certifications.
  • We are seeking inspectors at all levels (TCI I-IV), with pay reflecting certifications, responsibilities, and demonstrated construction inspection expertise.
  • The following certifications help ensure that Inspectors comply with NCDOT, AASHTO, and ASTM standards for transportation infrastructure projects.
  • ICE provides training for inspectors to obtain the following certifications and is invested in their professional growth.

Safety Requirement

  • For positions involving field work, completion of OSHA 10 certification is required as a condition of employment.
  • New hires without current certification must complete the training within two (2) weeks of hire.
  • ICE will provide the training and cover associated costs.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • The role involves moderate physical activity such as walking, standing, bending, and climbing stairs or ladders.
  • Employees may occasionally lift objects weighing up to 80 pounds.
  • It is essential for employees to navigate construction sites skillfully and conduct thorough inspections of materials and structures.
  • Employees must have the ability to visually discern and differentiate details and colors of objects, and proficiency in recognizing sound, tone, and pitch.
  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary.
  • The role demands adaptability to interruptions and changes in workflow, as well as the capacity to sit for extended periods.
  • Employees must be capable of working in varied environmental conditions, including hot, cold, and noisy settings, and be able to stand and walk during site visits.
  • Additionally, working on construction projects may involve night work and weekend work depending on the project scope and may include working in conditions with active traffic.

Expected Hours of Work

  • The ICE offices are open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, allowing an unpaid hour for lunch daily.
  • Work schedules may vary according to the project schedule.
