Responsibilities
- Affix to the inspection of various roadways and structures construction operations and execute a range of calculations and computations under supervision.
- Collect and test materials, including taking samples and conducting tests to verify that materials meet project specifications and are installed according to standards.
- Monitor and perform all types of inspection work on both complex and routine highway projects, maintaining detailed records of project activities and preparing monthly project estimates.
- Take field measurements of completed work items and calculate contract pay quantities based on these measurements.
- Read and interpret roadway, bridge, and structure plans and contract specifications.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Working knowledge of mathematics in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry and the ability to apply these concepts in practical scenarios.
- Proficiency in using iPad, Microsoft Office, Outlook, Dropbox, or OneDrive.
- Ability to work independently, use one’s own judgment, and make decisions.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to perform required testing and maintain detailed reports.
- Ability to communicate effectively with agency and contractor personnel and the general public.
- Ability to read and interpret roadway, bridge, and structure plans and contract specifications.
- Must be able to walk over rough and uneven terrain and stand for up to 12 hours a day on occasion.
- Must have the ability to bend, stoop, kneel, twist, use hands to grasp and arms to reach, raise hands above head, sit, climb, balance, work in confined spaces, and work at heights with adequate vision to perform tasks.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, on occasion.
- Ability to work outside in various weather conditions.
- Valid Driver's license with a good driving record and the ability to drive.
- Level II Technicians: Minimum four years of relevant experience, capable of performing duties without supervision and reading resource materials to determine answers to simple inspection requirements.
- Level III Technicians: Minimum five years of relevant experience, capable of performing duties without supervision and reading resource materials to determine answers to simple inspection requirements.
- Level IV Technicians: Minimum seven years of relevant experience, capable of performing duties without supervision and reading resource materials to determine answers to simple inspection requirements. May serve as a Lead Project Inspector, performing general project oversight and communication with the contractor and NCDOT, and responsible for supervising lower-level technicians while providing guidance as needed.
- Certifications (Preferred): NCDOT Concrete, NCDOT QMS Roadway, NCDOT Conventional Density, NCDOT ABC Sampling, NCDOT Borrow Pit Sampling, NCDOT Level II Erosion & Sediment Control.
