Transportation Construction Inspector (Full-Time)

Qualifications

• Construction work experience and basic understanding of construction means and methods for transportation projects with a focus on VDOT or other DOT experience
• Experience inspecting projects to include roadway widening, intersection improvements, signalization, bridges, roadway maintenance, streetscape, utilities, and work activities of the same or similar type
• Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
• Must pass a fingerprint-based criminal background check, DMV driving record check, reference verification, and work history check

Responsibilities

• Provides on-site compliance inspection, quality assurance, and progress monitoring for conformance to plans, contracts, specifications, and codes applicable to the construction operations assigned
• Communicates with and advises contractors of discrepancies and the necessary actions to conform to the plans and specifications
• Maintains project records including daily diaries documenting work performed by construction contractors
• Performs basic algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric calculations and associated sketches for reports
• Checks materials and material documents to verify testing; sends additional samples to client or other testing laboratories when required
• Assists with review of payment applications, final inspections, and creation of punchlists
• Communicates effectively and professionally with the client, contractor, traveling public, adjacent property owners, other project stakeholders, and team members
• Ensures highway work zones and traffic control comply with current standards
• Performs materials testing, basic surveying, and other work of basic to moderate difficulty
• Completes administrative duties including daily timesheet, monthly expense report, and monthly mileage report
• Stands, sits, climbs ladders, works at heights, and works outdoors in a wide range of weather conditions; safely navigates uneven terrain

Requirements

• High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
• Must possess OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour certification or obtain within 3 months of hire
• Working knowledge of basic mathematics including algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric computations based on field measurements
• Construction-related training and/or experience or course work in road/bridge construction, civil engineering, materials, and tools utilized in transportation projects
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, email, internet navigation, and web-based tools

Preferred certifications: VDOT Intermediate Work Zone Protection, Asphalt Field Level I and II, Soils and Aggregate, Pavement Marking, Nuclear Gauge Safety, Guard Rail Inspector Training, ACI Concrete, DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control and Stormwater Management, WACEL, ICC, NICET, or MARTCP.

Pay

Base hourly rate: $30.00 to $36.00. Actual compensation determined based on work location, qualifications, experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training.
