Transportation Construction Inspector (Full-Time)

Full-time position.

Qualifications

• Construction work experience and basic understanding of construction means and methods for transportation projects, with a focus on VDOT or other DOT experience.
• Experience inspecting projects including roadway widening, intersection improvements, signalization, bridges, roadway maintenance, streetscape, utilities, and similar work activities.
• Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
• Must pass a fingerprint-based criminal background check, DMV driving record check, reference verification, and work history check.
• High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
• Must possess OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour certification or obtain within 3 months of hire.
• Working knowledge of basic mathematics including algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric computations based on field measurements.
• Construction-related training and/or experience or coursework in road/bridge construction, civil engineering, materials, and tools utilized in transportation projects.
• Certifications from VDOT (e.g., Intermediate Work Zone Protection, Asphalt Field Level I and II, Soils and Aggregate, Pavement Marking, Nuclear Gauge Safety, Guard Rail Inspector Training, ACI Concrete, DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control, and Stormwater Management) are preferred.
• Other relevant certifications include WACEL, ICC, NICET, or MARTCP.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, email, internet navigation, and web-based tools.

Responsibilities

• Provides on-site compliance inspection, quality assurance, and progress monitoring for conformance to plans, contracts, specifications, and codes.
• Communicates with and advises contractors of discrepancies and necessary corrective actions to conform to plans and specifications.
• Maintains project records, including daily diaries documenting contractor work performed.
• Prepares reports involving basic algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric calculations and associated sketches.
• Checks materials and material documents to verify testing; sends additional samples to client or testing laboratories as required.
• Assists with review of payment applications, final inspections, and creation of punchlists.
• Communicates professionally with clients, contractors, the public, adjacent property owners, stakeholders, and team members.
• Ensures highway work zones and traffic control comply with current standards.
• Performs materials testing, basic surveying, and other work of basic to moderate difficulty.
• Completes administrative duties, including daily timesheets, monthly expense reports, and monthly mileage reports.
• Stands, sits, climbs ladders, works at heights, and works outdoors in various weather conditions while safely navigating uneven terrain.

Pay

Base hourly rate: $30.00 to $36.00. Actual compensation determined based on work location, qualifications, experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training.
