Transportation Construction Inspector

Description of Work

In this position, you will be responsible for ensuring that all tasks are executed in accordance with established construction codes, plans, standards, and specifications. A critical aspect of your role will involve inspecting all stages of transportation construction activities, which includes verifying grades, elevations, and the layout of structures and roadways in collaboration with contractors and surveyors. You will also assess the installation of various materials, including cement concrete, bituminous concrete, and drainage components. Additionally, you will conduct compaction testing using visual non-movement methods on sub-surface strata, soils, and aggregates. Engaging with Department personnel, as well as federal, state, and local agencies, legislators, and the public, will be vital to ensure the successful management of the projects.

Work Schedule and Additional Information

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Hollidaysburg.
• Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $44,890 (before taxes).

Required Experience, Training & Eligibility

Qualifications

• One year as an Engineering Technician (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
• Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (Commonwealth job titles or equivalent Federal Government job titles, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
• Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or
• Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or
• One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirement

This position requires possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver’s License or equivalent.
