Transportation Construction Inspector
Position Summary
The Transportation Construction Inspector is responsible for monitoring construction activities to ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, safety standards, and applicable regulatory requirements. This role supports project engineers and construction managers in delivering high-quality transportation infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect construction activities for compliance with plans, specifications, and contract requirements
- Monitor roadway, bridge, and structural work including:
- Earthwork and embankment
- Lime-treated subgrade
- Drainage systems
- Structural concrete and bridge components
- Retaining walls
- Asphalt and concrete paving
- Observe and document daily construction activities, progress, and issues
- Perform and/or witness material testing (asphalt and concrete)
- Review and verify contractor quantities for progress payments
- Participate in pre-construction and progress meetings
- Clock with Project Engineers, inspectors, and contractor personnel to resolve field issues
- Maintain traffic control and phasing plans for compliance with safety standards
- Inspect traffic control devices and barricades
- Maintain accurate field documentation and reports
- Work in active construction environments, including exposure to weather conditions and variable schedules
Required Qualifications
- 3–5 years of construction inspection experience on transportation or civil infrastructure projects
- Experience with roadway, bridge, or tollway construction projects
- Working knowledge of inspection methods, materials testing, and construction practices
- Familiarity with applicable safety standards and regulations
- Experience working with TxDOT, municipal agencies, or toll authorities
- Valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with illumination (lighting) systems
- Experience on TxDOT or NTTA projects
- Familiarity with Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD)
- Experience with TxDOT SiteManager or similar systems
Core Competencies
- Strong communication and coordination skills
- Ability to identify and document construction issues
- Knowledge of inspection and testing procedures
- Able to perform basic calculations (quantities, measurements)
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety
Work Environment
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving machinery & mechanical parts, uneven ground, exposure to dust, gas or fumes, exposure to loud noise, and outside weather conditions.
Physical Requirements
- Intermittent unassisted sitting, walking, standing, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, twisting, stooping, crawling, pushing and lifting is required.
- Must be able to walk and/or stand for prolonged periods of time for at least eight hours per day.
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move light equipment up to 50 pounds without assistance.
- Must be alert to equipment in the field, occasional need to work near hazardous equipment and machinery, ability to walk on uneven ground while physically maneuvering construction sites, ability to work in extreme temperatures or humidity, and potentially work at heights.
Other Requirements
- Possession of a valid state of residence driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Daily travel to and from construction sites, generally within 100 miles from the home office is expected.
- Short term, out of town, assignments may be required.
- Long term, out of town, assignments may be required, with advance notice of planned dates.
- May be required to work protracted and irregular hours to meet client's needs, including nights, overtime and weekends.
