Transportation Assistant (Hazardous)

Plans, coordinates, and controls shipment of material and equipment for the DLA Distribution Depot.

Responsibilities

• Prepares shipment documentation for material and equipment, including hazardous materials.
• Provides advice and assistance to customers on all aspects of transportation and distribution functions.
• Provides status, resolves problems, prepares reports, and traces shipments upon request.
• Offers traffic management support by selecting, approving, procuring, and using safe and cost-effective carrier services.
• Determines the most efficient and economical rates and routes for domestic inbound and export shipments worldwide.
• Classifies, rates, routes, and moves a wide range of commodities, including hazardous materials.
• Plans shipping dates, material pick-up, and loading times for shipments to government activities both overseas and within the continental U.S.
• Performs day-to-day verification and payment of invoices using various automated systems.
• Computes and verifies transportation costs; contacts carriers for rates when required.
• Determines economical routing based on technical review of guides and tariffs.
• Reviews automated documentation for all shipments, correcting invalid, void, or missing information.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Tour of Duty: Set schedule.
• Security Requirements: Non-Critical Sensitive with Secret Access.
• Appointment subject to a favorable suitability or fitness determination; unfavorably adjudicated background checks are grounds for removal.
• Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA): Non-Exempt.
• Selective Service Requirement: Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered or exempt.
• Bargaining Unit Status: No.
• Selectees must have a REAL ID or other acceptable identification documents for access to federal facilities.
• Mission Essential employee: Required to work during emergencies to ensure continuation of essential functions.
• Pre-Employment Physical: Required.
• Must obtain and maintain licenses/certifications required by installation, federal, state, and local laws, including a valid state driver’s license to operate government vehicles and a valid MHE license.
• Must obtain and maintain required hazardous materials handling certifications.
• Subject to Overseas Rotation Agreement with a tour length of 36 months.

Qualifications

To qualify for a Transportation Assistant (Hazardous), your resume and supporting documentation must support:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military, or private sector. Creditable specialized experience includes:

• Determining the most efficient and economical rates and routes for domestic inbound and export shipments.
• Classifying, rating, routing, and moving a wide range of commodities, including hazardous materials.

Education Substitution: Graduate education may be credited if directly related to the position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training.

Physical Demands

• Work is generally sedentary but may require handling material up to 25 pounds; assistance or lifting devices used for heavier items.
• May require climbing ladders and working on safety pallets.
• Warehouse work may involve long periods of standing, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, or reaching.

Work Environment

• Work is usually performed in an office setting but may require visits to warehouses, secure areas, or outdoor locations.
• May work in hazardous areas with chemicals, poisons, or low-level radioactive materials.
• May work in refrigerated areas (42-45°F) or small freezers (below 0°F).
• Required to wear appropriate safety clothing and equipment as determined by safety requirements and supervisor.

Education

If using education to qualify, you must provide transcripts or other documentation. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable at the time of application.

• Graduate Education: One academic year of graduate education is defined by the graduate school or 18 semester hours (27 quarter hours).
• Foreign Education: Must be evaluated by a private organization specializing in foreign education equivalency.
