About the Role

This position involves performing transportation assistant functions and miscellaneous transportation support tasks to ensure efficient logistics operations.

Responsibilities

  • Process documents for the shipment of freight, Less-Than-Truck Load (LTL), Dedicated Truck (DTK), and Air Line Communications (ALOC)/air documents.
  • Provide assistance with the freight rating and classification process.
  • Initiate requests to Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC).
  • Process cancellation requests, research and resolve shipping discrepancies, and prepare routine reports to document shipping activities.
  • Utilize standard office software to perform data entry of key shipping information and manage transportation-related documents.
  • Resolve a wide range of shipping problems by applying and interpreting transportation regulations to ensure accurate, timely shipment of freight by rail, truck, air, or water.
  • Operate automated transportation systems to input, retrieve, and reconcile shipping data.
  • Apply transportation regulations, formats, and terminology to correctly process and document the movement of specialized shipments.
  • Arrange and direct the use of specialized procedures, such as temperature-controlled storage, signature-required delivery, and proper hazardous material packing and certification.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Tour of Duty: Set Schedule.
  • Security Requirements: Non-Critical Sensitive with Secret Access. Appointment is subject to a favorable suitability or fitness determination; unfavorably adjudicated background checks will be grounds for removal.
  • Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA): Non-Exempt.
  • Selective Service Requirement: Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered or exempt from Selective Service.
  • Bargaining Unit Status: No.
  • Selectees are required to have a REAL ID or other acceptable identification documents to access certain federal facilities.
  • You will be a Mission Essential employee, required to work during emergencies to ensure continuation of essential functions. You may be required to work at the designated duty location, a telework site, or an alternate location/facility.
  • This position may be used to fill various shifts located within DLA Distribution Red River, TX.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain licenses and/or certifications required by the installation, federal, state, and local laws, including hazardous materials handling certifications, Material Handling Equipment (MHE) license, and a valid state driver’s license to operate government vehicles.

Qualifications

To qualify for a Transportation Assistant (Hazardous), your resume and supporting documentation must support one of the following:

  • Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position. To qualify at the GS-06 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military, or private sector. Creditable specialized experience includes:
    • Resolving a wide range of shipping problems by applying and interpreting transportation regulations.
    • Operating automated transportation systems to input, retrieve, and reconcile shipping data.
    • Applying transportation regulations, formats, and terminology to correctly process and document shipments.
    • Arranging and directing specialized procedures for shipments, such as temperature-controlled storage or hazardous material handling.
  • Education: Graduate education may be credited in instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable at the time of application.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).
