Pay range: $24.06–$26.44 per hour

Schedule: 4 hours per day, 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. (subject to change) and 2:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. (subject to change)

Reports to: Director of Transportation • Regular part-time, non-exempt position with a 120-work-day probationary period

About the role

Assist children—including those with special needs—safely boarding and exiting the bus, secure wheelchairs, seat belts, car seats, and booster seats, and manage behaviorally impaired students.

Responsibilities

  • Help maintain positive control over students transported on the school bus and observe all mandatory safety regulations
  • Assist with pupil control and report violations to proper authorities
  • Notify supervisor in case of illness to secure a substitute
  • Promote good public relations through personal appearance, attitude, conversation, and bus cleanliness
  • Maintain confidentiality of student medical records and other sensitive information
  • Interact positively with staff, students, and parents; serve as a role model
  • Attend required meetings and in-service training
  • Report all accidents and complete required reports
  • Enforce applicable Board policies
  • Attend bus driver meetings and be available during emergency dismissals
  • Conduct rear-door emergency evacuation drills
  • Respond to routine questions and requests appropriately
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Less than one year of related experience (alternative qualifications may be considered by the Superintendent and/or Board of Education)
  • Ability to work effectively with others and communicate clearly both orally and in writing
  • Active listening, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to maintain full control over bus discipline at all times
  • Knowledge of basic first aid
  • Ability to read and understand verbal and written instructions, warnings, and labels
  • Patience and understanding

  • Wheelchairs
  • Child car and booster seat mechanisms
  • Child restraint (harness) systems

Working conditions

  • Frequent exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue
  • Frequent interaction with unruly children
  • Occasional extensive sitting (up to 2 hours at a time)
  • Frequent movement around the workspace and travel throughout school buildings
  • Frequent positioning to access and operate equipment
  • Occasional lifting and carrying up to 65 pounds
  • Occasional pushing and pulling up to 300 pounds (on wheels)
  • Occasional overtime may be requested and expected
  • Must remain free of alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substances in the workplace
