Transplant Procurement Technician

About the Role

The Transplant Procurement Technician supports the cardiac organ recovery team and works under the direction of the recovery surgeon. Responsibilities include verifying organ matches, communicating with the Organ Procurement Organization (OPO), transplant coordinator, recipient operating room, and the transplant team. The role involves finalizing travel plans for the recovery team, communicating turnaround and arrival times, assisting with organ recovery in the donor Operating Room (OR), and preparing organs for transport in adherence with UNOS guidelines and CMS regulations. Additional duties include inventorying and stocking instruments and equipment, maintaining professional relationships with OPO, UNOS, and transplant teams, and staying current on procurement recommendations, CMS regulations, and hospital transplant policies. May be assigned to either adult or pediatric transplant teams as needed.

Responsibilities

• Verify the organ is a match for the recipient.
• Communicate with the Organ Procurement Organization (OPO), transplant coordinator, recipient operating room, and transplant team.
• Finalize travel plans for the recovery team and communicate turnaround and arrival times at the donor hospital.
• Accompany the recovery team and assist with organ recovery in the donor Operating Room (OR).
• Assist the recovery surgeon as requested.
• Prepare organs for transport in adherence with UNOS guidelines and CMS regulations.
• Inventory and stock instruments and equipment, and prepare procurement bags for the next recovery.
• Maintain professional working relationships with OPO, UNOS, and transplant teams.
• Stay current on procurement recommendations, CMS regulations, and hospital transplant policies.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree in a related field or completion of a Surgical Technician program preferred.
• One year of organ procurement, surgical technician, or related experience required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association required.

Skills

• Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and organ transplant procedures.
• Understanding of state and federal healthcare regulations and United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) requirements.
• Ability to work calmly in a fast-paced, stressful environment while maintaining attention to detail.
• Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English (Spanish preferred).
• Competency in using computer and software programs relevant to the position.
• Ability to troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment.
• Strong interpersonal skills to communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others.
• Ability to follow and enforce policies, lead, supervise, teach, and collaborate.
