About the Role
Individuals in this position will collaborate with operating company and corporate personnel to generate and maintain a current list of potential transmission projects. They will also be involved in pre-engineering field reviews, project coordination, and interfacing with external entities such as the North American Transmission Forum (NATF) and EPRI.
Responsibilities
- Conduct technical engineering reviews and develop designs of civil aspects related to transmission line infrastructure.
- Prioritize projects based on facility performance, outage history, and number of customers impacted.
- Evaluate mining impacts, karst topography, and blasting designs for potential transmission asset impacts.
- Support slip and soil erosion mitigation efforts.
- Lead and/or support transmission tower foundation inspection and restorations.
- Present projects to upper management for consideration, approval, and funding.
- Perform pre-engineering field reviews of facilities and identify specific project work scopes.
- Interact with design engineers and field personnel responsible for project construction.
- Perform periodic quality control field inspections.
- Support the Tower Coating Program.
- Coordinate and schedule project meetings with internal and external sources.
- Investigate line operations, identify causes, and recommend remedies to eliminate future issues.
- Conduct tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
- Lead discussions with internal and external departments to identify project and process alternatives and solutions.
- Develop and implement technical process and project improvements with field personnel.
- Attend and participate in departmental meetings and activities.
- Review encroachments within Transmission Rights-of-Ways.
- Maintain a safe workplace based on knowledge of potential hazards and industry regulations.
- Mentor Rotational Engineers and Co-Ops.
- Deliver quality, accurate work within established deadlines.
An employee hired at the Engineer IV level will perform all the above responsibilities with greater proficiency and independence, and will be assigned additional related responsibilities.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Mining Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution is required. Acceptable alternatives include:
- A Professional Engineer’s (PE) License.
- A bachelor’s degree in a civil or mining technical field (non-ABET) plus an advanced degree in Civil Engineering from a university with an ABET-accredited Bachelor’s program.
- Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certificate is preferred.
- Mining experience preferred.
- Blasting experience preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of engineering experience (Engineer III) or 5 years (Engineer IV).
- Knowledge of the electric transmission system, reliability standards, and regional transmission organizations is preferred.
- Knowledge of NESC, NERC, and RF standards and policies of the electric utility industry is preferred.
- Experience analyzing complex problems and demonstrating good judgment in decision-making.
- Demonstrated ability to manage diverse projects, including schedule, cost tracking, and budget control.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively across multiple departments and locations.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to make formal technical presentations to management.
- Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office) and AutoCAD required.
- Ability to work in both office and field environments.
- Willingness and ability to travel to various company locations, including overnight travel.
Engineer IV candidates will be expected to work at a higher level of responsibility and with greater self-direction.
