Transmission Planning Operations Engineer

About the role

AES Corporation, the largest US-based global power company with 8,300 employees across 12 countries, is seeking a Transmission Planning Operations Engineer. This role involves independently conducting operational planning coordination for the transmission project portfolio, including construction schedule coordination, management of change support, and outage and network model coordination across MISO and PJM.

Responsibilities

• Assist in maintaining a coordinated construction project list and integrated project schedule using P6, ensuring a common reference across planning, development, engineering, execution, and close-out stages while capturing project shifts and scope adjustments.
• Perform quality control reviews of consultant-prepared construction schedules, including Facility Study schedules.
• Conduct an annual review of the coordinated project list to inform prioritization and scope fidelity, supporting long-lead material and labor resource planning as electric network conditions evolve.
• Support the team’s NERC Management of Change compliance structure by evaluating project changes requiring review or re-evaluation by subject matter experts (e.g., PRC-004, PRC-025, PRC-027, FAC-002, FAC-008) and routing changes to appropriate owners.
• Independently support long-term (three-year and one-year) and short-term (three-month) operational planning for outage coordination using power flow models to reduce the risk of project outage approval failures.
• Coordinate outage-related planning input with System Operations and PMO functions to support holistic outage scheduling.
• Manage MISO and PJM operational/network models and coordinate with the System Planning team on forecasted modeling changes.
• Submit and maintain tickets in MISO CROW and PJM eDART to reflect project and outage-related model changes.
• Assist the Transmission Operations Control Center during emergencies (e.g., extreme weather, emergency repairs, or system restoration) to ensure timely return to energization for AES customers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in the electric utility industry.
• Ability to perform analysis and prepare engineering deliverables without supervision.
• Passing grade on Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

Skills

• Bachelor’s degree, certificate, or equivalent experience in power systems studies (highly desired).
• Proficiency in project scheduling and management, including Primavera P6 or similar software.
• Detailed understanding of regulatory frameworks (NERC, FERC, PJM/MISO).
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for complex ideas.
• Proven technical knowledge of the transmission grid.
• Experience with MISO CROW and/or PJM eDART ticket submission and management.
• Experience with MISO and/or PJM outage coordination processes and operational/network model submission requirements.
• Working knowledge of power flow modeling concepts and tools (e.g., PSS®E or similar).
