Transmission Line Estimator

About the role

Welty Energy & Infrastructure (WE&I), an affiliate of Welty, is a professional services company specializing in program and project management, transmission line engineering, substation engineering, and construction oversight on transmission, substation, and distribution projects ranging from 4 kV to 765 kV. Headquartered in Akron, OH, and working nationally, Welty Energy currently manages approximately $500 million in construction projects for electric utilities in the Midwest and Northeast regions of the U.S.

As a Transmission Line Estimator, you will create utility project estimates, act as an extension of the client’s team, and provide best‑in‑class service. You will consult on select projects, assist the Welty Project Management Team, and mentor junior estimators. This position is remote within the mainland United States, operating on Eastern Time hours.

Responsibilities

• Create preliminary project schedules considering lead times, crews, construction durations, siting, etc.
• Write Scope of Work for conceptual/pre‑funding approval projects.
• Work with internal transmission layout teams for preliminary transmission designs.
• Create and review estimates.
• Work on projects involving 25 kV–765 kV utility power equipment transmissions.
• Review/aide supplemental support estimates such as forestry, SCADA/IT network, fiber, testing and commissioning, and related items.
• Coordinate with other scoping and estimating team members, planning and protection engineering, sponsors, regional contacts, and personnel from the supplemental support estimate staff.
• Attend regional meetings with planning, protection, and other stakeholders to review the status of all open estimates.
• Review/approve/reject estimate requests in OPPM.
• Build accurate project schedule timelines for substation and support estimates.

Requirements

• Ability to effectively manage a high‑volume workload while communicating efficiently and effectively with internal and external clients.
• Solid understanding of engineering design/drawing packages.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or similar technical degree is advantageous.
• 2+ years of either transmission design or estimating experience within the electric utility industry required.
• Microsoft Office Suite proficiency, specifically Excel.

Qualifications

• Sage Estimating software, Navigator, OPPM (Primavera P6), Google Earth experience.
• Experience with substation design, construction, and/or testing (aligned with estimating experience).
• Ability to mine and analyze data.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings is highly preferred.
