About the Role
As a Transitional Teacher (Gifted & Talented), you will provide instruction at the professional level as a classroom teacher, team teacher, or remedial/special services teacher. The role involves planning, implementing, and evaluating instructional activities under established guidelines, with a focus on gifted and talented education.
Responsibilities
- Prepare yearly instructional outlines and daily lesson plans covering relevant units of study, specifying objectives, activities, and evaluative methods for both group and individual programs.
- Teach students by selecting, developing, adapting, and implementing appropriate instructional methods and techniques using available resources to ensure academic achievement.
- Provide learning experiences in assigned subject areas that develop cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skills tailored to the needs and interests of all students.
- Continuously evaluate individual and group academic progress using criterion-referenced tests, periodic standardized tests, oral tests, and other relevant evaluative methods.
- Use alternative instruction to meet individual student needs.
- Prepare progress reports for parents and confer with parents and other concerned individuals regarding student behavior and progress.
- Maintain required records in accordance with applicable regulations.
- Maintain control of assigned class and handle discipline independently, except for chronic or extreme behavior problems.
- Counsel individual students within established guidelines, using background information to provide an effective instruction-learning cycle.
Requirements
- U.S. citizenship is required.
- Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must be registered under the Military Selective Service Act and the Defense Authorization Act of 1986.
- A background security investigation will be required for all new hires; appointment is contingent upon successful completion and favorable adjudication.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license, as the role may require operating a government-owned or leased motor vehicle as an incidental duty.
- Must be willing to enroll in an Alternative Licensure program to obtain and maintain valid teacher licensure/certification in the state where the position is located and in the specialty field identified by the job posting.
- Will be placed on provisional status for three contract terms while enrolled and participating in the Alternative Licensure program.
- This position is exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act.
- Probationary period is one academic year (two full academic semesters) during which fitness and continued employment will be evaluated.
Qualifications
- Possess a Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) from an accredited educational institution.
- Provide proof of enrollment in a local state’s alternative teaching licensure/certificate program within 90 days of the start date of the position. Enrollment must be for the appropriate endorsement/subject field as identified in the job posting (e.g., elementary, mathematics, special education, chemistry).
- Applicants with DODEA certification may work with states directly for reciprocity licensure and are not required to enroll in an Alternative Licensure program unless mandated by the state.
- Submit a legible copy of transcripts (official or unofficial) to meet education requirements. Official transcripts are required upon selection. Ensure transcripts are not locked or encrypted and all pages (including the transcript key) are viewable.
- Education must be obtained from an accredited or pre-accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education to be credited toward qualifications.
- For foreign education, credentials must be evaluated by a private organization specializing in interpretation of foreign education programs and deemed equivalent to a U.S. education program, or full credit must be given by a U.S. accredited college or university.
Pay
Pay is determined based on degree and experience, limited to Pay Level 14. Pay setting occurs after the selection process.
- Pay Level 11: Bachelor’s Degree
- Pay Level 12: Bachelor’s Degree + 15 graduate semester hours
- Pay Level 13: Bachelor’s Degree + 30 graduate semester hours
- Pay Level 14: Master’s Degree
Education must be in coursework related to the topic being taught or general teaching methodologies. Experience, including volunteer work (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps), may be considered for determining pay increments. The maximum number of years creditable for pay setting is 17. The per-hour rate for teacher positions will be modified based on the school calendar for the location (Modified Hourly/Date Rate, or MHR/MDR), and is non-negotiable.
