Transit Service Supervisor

About the Role

This position manages on-time, scheduled bus service and provides daily, direct supervision of bus operators. Responsibilities include ensuring safe and efficient transportation service through coaching, counseling, and disciplining bus operators, as well as overseeing on-time dispatching of operators for regular, extra, and "report" assignments. The role also involves road observation of bus operators and monitoring major hubs and service areas to ensure effective service delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Perform management duties in dispatch, radio communication, and field operations, rotating through assignments and obtaining required certifications.
  • Manage onsite street operations, radio communications, and equipment to ensure scheduled bus service and passenger safety.
  • Analyze street operations, respond to service variations, and direct bus operators to resolve day-to-day issues such as vehicle breakdowns, accidents, detours, missed trips, and late routes.
  • Make decisions to restore or maintain service using independent judgment and statistical reports.
  • Assign daily regular and extra work, interpret and enforce GoTriangle policies, and document scheduling irregularities (e.g., call-outs, late reports, AWOLs).
  • Authorize benefit leave, time card adjustments, vacation, sick leave, and miscellaneous time off requests.
  • Represent management in interpreting and enforcing policies, initiating discipline procedures, and handling grievances.
  • Supervise, evaluate, train, counsel, and discipline bus operators to maximize productivity and morale.
  • Evaluate operators through face-to-face interactions, road supervision, ride checks, and video reviews; develop recommendations and incentives for improvement.
  • Participate in the hiring process, including interviewing candidates and coordinating training.
  • Manage workflow, prioritize projects, and measure division performance, taking corrective action as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with city, local, state, and federal laws governing regional transit service.
  • Coordinate with local police, safety, fire departments, and other entities to address service disruptions.
  • Resolve passenger disputes and manage accident scenes, including crisis management and accident investigation.
  • Act as a liaison between the public and GoTriangle to address customer complaints and recommend disciplinary actions.
  • Recommend operational improvements, budgetary adjustments, and process streamlining.
  • Collaborate with other GoTriangle departments to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Support affirmative action and organizational goals to eliminate discrimination.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years of experience in Transit Operations or a closely related industry (e.g., logistics, warehousing, fleet management, scheduling, dispatch, or customer service).
  • Two (2) years of leadership and management experience.
  • Proficiency in all bus operator duties.
  • Six (6) years of driving experience with a good driving record, including ability to drive in adverse weather.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with passenger endorsement.
  • Must meet Department of Transportation physical requirements and maintain a DOT card.
  • Ability to maintain excellent attendance, including during adverse weather.
  • Positive and professional attitude with strong teamwork skills.
  • Strong leadership, management, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to develop program objectives and work independently on multiple projects.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills for effective communication with government officials, staff, and the public.
  • Working knowledge of PCs and Microsoft Office Packages.
  • Availability to work in all weather conditions, nights, weekends, and holidays.

An equivalent combination of related education and experience may substitute for the above minimums, excluding High School Diploma, GED, Licenses, or Certifications.

Working Conditions

Works in an environment with exposure to dust, noise, or extreme temperatures. May be moderately exposed to unpleasant conditions (e.g., weather, petroleum products, chemicals) while visiting operating facilities. Must observe all safety policies and use protective clothing/devices provided.

Physical Requirements

Exerts up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible force frequently. Requires sitting for extended periods, as well as walking and standing.

Schedule

Afternoons to nights, including weekends and holidays.
