Transit Dispatcher
Full-time, onsite position within the Facilities Management Division.
About the role
The Transit Dispatcher performs public transportation scheduling, routing, and dispatching duties. During the summer season, Transit Bus Operators may be assigned to other departments within Facilities Management (Maintenance, Custodial, Design & Renovations, Grounds) to provide work continuity when transit operations slow or halt. The role requires independent work, sound judgment, and discretion.
As essential personnel, the Transit Dispatcher must be available during school closings, delays, shutdowns, emergencies, and severe weather incidents, including snow removal activities. Availability for scheduled and unscheduled hours is required, especially during campus events such as Winter Fest, Orientation, Convocation, Commencement, CFAW, and summer camps.
Responsibilities
- Operate communication equipment, including two-way radio, telephone, computer mobile dispatch terminal, and scheduling systems.
- Create, maintain, and monitor computerized driver manifests and schedules; modify and update schedules to improve services.
- Respond to service requests and provide information to passengers and the public.
- Perform snow removal and other emergency-related tasks as assigned.
- Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while performing job duties, including protective eyewear, ear protection, hard hat, gloves, slip-resistant/steel-toed shoes, respirators/masks, reflective safety vests, and sunscreen.
- Provide dispatching and routing services for seniors, disabled individuals under the ADA, and the general public; dispatch fixed-route and paratransit vehicles.
- Maintain up-to-date listings of buses, drivers, and route sheets; ensure accurate daily rosters of drivers and assigned buses.
- Foster a cordial working relationship with drivers and supervisors; ensure proper procedures for bus key and clipboard check-out/check-in.
- Operate two-way radio in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of post-trip forms and ensure Ride Systems is properly updated and on schedule.
- Perform clerical duties, including answering multi-line phones, sorting mail, data entry, and maintaining records, logs, and files for transit and paratransit services; create monthly reports.
- Provide quality customer service and respond to public inquiries courteously.
- Remain current with emerging technologies, processes, and industry benchmarks.
- Work effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering Liberty University’s mission.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 1+ years of related experience managing staff in the transit field.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to analyze information, apply judgment, and solve routine and complex problems.
- Strong organizational and computer skills.
- Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and flexible daily/evening hours.
- Regularly required to lift 50+ pounds.
- Valid Virginia driver’s license, acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance (periodic driving of university vehicles may be required).
- Certifications obtained at the employer’s expense must be reimbursed to the University if voluntarily terminated within the first 12 months.
Pay
Compensation ranges from $18.27 to $21.63 per hour, determined by qualifications, experience, education, skills, certifications, University needs, and external market conditions.
