About the role

This is an hourly position on an as-needed basis. The position provides speech-to-text services in classrooms to ensure equal access to programs and activities. 36-60 hours of training, paid for by Student Disability Services, is required for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Complete a Basic Skills Course that is online and paid for by Student Disability Services
  • Once trained, pair with an experienced transcriber who will support you in gaining experience and comfort working as a transcriber
  • Provide meaning-for-meaning services in classrooms, lectures on campus, professor/student meetings, conferences, special events, and other places where dialog might occur
  • Transcribe text that is streamed wirelessly to the reader so they can see the information and participate in the discussion

Required Skills

  • Good listening and memory skills
  • Excellent English skills
  • Typing speed of at least 60 words per minute, with no errors
  • No history of pain in the arms or wrist that might suggest a repetitive motion disorder
