Trainee Biomedical Scientist

Job Summary

This is an exciting time to join one of the largest Pathology departments in the country. Our new £30m Pathology building (on the St. James’s University Hospital site) and new Acute Hospital Laboratory (on the Leeds General Infirmary site) are now operational. The Department of Blood Sciences is seeking to recruit experienced and innovative Biomedical Scientist in Haematology to help shape, deliver and improve the service we deliver to our patients.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

• To carry out the job sufficiently and effectively you will have successfully studied for an accredited degree in biomedical sciences, or other equivalent qualification acceptable to the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).
• Be fully competent member of the department following successful completion of competencies.
• Work both independently and as part of a team.
• Be flexible for unsocial hours of working and participate in our 24/7 Hours rota.
• To be able to perform a wide range of specialist clinical technical investigations.
• Have excellent communication skills, manual dexterity, attention to detail and be able to prioritize workload effectively.
• Work in different sections of the department to contribute towards the provision of an accurate and timely service for patients.
• Apply professional judgements and specialist skills to technically complex and sometimes difficult situations.
• Organize the tasks of support workers within the team.
• Communicate highly complex information, often related to patient management and care, to colleagues, healthcare staff and other organizations including engineers and service providers.
• Assist in the day-to-day running of the laboratory or a particular section of the laboratory, under supervision/delegation of the advanced biomedical scientist.
• Maintain continuous professional development and competencies.

What You Will Bring To The Role

• Work within a large hub laboratory utilising cutting edge technology, serving both Leeds Teaching Hospitals and the wider community.
• This includes the regional Oncology centre and the Leeds Children's Hospital, which is a unique opportunity for the successful candidate to gain wide ranging experience within the discipline.
• The successful candidate will possess an IBMS accredited BSc in Biomedical Sciences and ideally will have already made progress with the IBMS Registration Portfolio.
• Laboratory Haematology experience within an NHS laboratory would also be advantageous.
• This is a full-time role which will include evening, night and weekend working across both Leeds sites, as directed by the management team.
• This post is advertised as a 12-month training post during which the individual must obtain HCPC registration via completion of the IBMS registration portfolio.
• If successful in obtaining registration status, the post will be made permanent.
