Traffic Signal Technician

About the role

The Traffic Signal Technician performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and electronic traffic signal control devices and related systems within the Traffic Engineering Division of the Public Works Department.

Responsibilities

• Perform locates of underground facilities (Gopher State One-Call Locates).
• Install and inspect electrical equipment.
• Troubleshoot, repair, modify, and maintain traffic signals, decorative pedestrian lighting, and holiday outlets.
• Troubleshoot, test, and repair traffic signals, including electronic components, cabinets, wiring, and electrical and fiber optic communications equipment.
• Repair and maintain downtown sidewalk lighting and holiday lighting outlets.
• Operate lift trucks.
• Adjust and update traffic signal controller timings.
• Maintain updated records and prepare reports using spreadsheets and databases.
• Perform periodic testing of traffic signal conflict monitors.
• Maintain an inventory of parts, supplies, and equipment.
• Conduct routine maintenance of signal cabinets, including cleaning, lubricating, and filter changing.
• Respond to after-hours traffic signal failures or damage.
• Mark the location of underground traffic signal and sidewalk lighting/outlet facilities, and City of Rochester fiber optics.
• Maintain Gopher State One-Call records.
• Respond to after-hours emergency locates.
• Install replacement and modified traffic signal controller cabinets and other components.
• Repair or install minor wiring, lighting, and electrical equipment in public works buildings, including the traffic operations building and street maintenance buildings.
• Inspect contractor-constructed traffic signal projects to verify compliance with contract specifications.
• Perform other duties as assigned or necessary.

Requirements

• Two (2) years of college or technical school training in an electrical or electronics-related field.
• Four (4) years of experience installing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and/or repairing electrical or electronic equipment.
• Valid Minnesota driver’s license.
• Valid Minnesota Journeyman Electrician Class A licensure.

• International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) certification: Work Zone Safety and Traffic Signal Systems (desirable).
• Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) certification: Traffic Signals and Lighting (desirable).
• Master Electrician License (desirable).

This position is classified as Medium/Heavy Work: exerting up to 100 pounds infrequently, and/or 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

• Frequent demands: simultaneous and repetitive use of hands, wrists, and fingers.
• Occasional demands: standing, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting, bending, reaching, and handling.
• Sensory requirements: sight, hearing, and touch.
• Environmental conditions:
  • Extreme cold (below 32 degrees) and extreme heat (above 100 degrees).
  • Noise (need to shout to be heard).
  • Exposure to dust, gas, fumes, steam, and chemicals.
  • Work outdoors with no effective protection from weather.
  • Walk on uneven ground (gravel, rocks, mounds, construction sites).
  • Work around moving machinery (lift trucks, forklifts, tractors, cranes, etc.).
  • Use of protective equipment (gloves, eyewear, earplugs, mask, respirator, etc.).

Schedule

The regular work schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.

Pay

2026 Salary Range: $34.82 to $54.88 per hour.
