About the role

The Traffic Signal Technician 2 (District 4) is responsible for installing, maintaining, fabricating, and programming complex traffic signals and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), highway lighting, and miscellaneous electrical devices. This position involves utilizing computer and/or mobile devices along with related traffic signal software to operate and maintain traffic signals in compliance with Ohio Revised Code (ORC) sections, Ohio Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (OMUTCD) manual, and Traffic Engineering Manual (TEM).

Responsibilities

• Install, maintain, fabricate, and program traffic signals and ITS, highway lighting, and miscellaneous electrical devices.
• Utilize computer and/or mobile devices and related traffic signal software for traffic signal operation and maintenance.
• Wires and/or directs wiring of control cabinets; program controllers and monitor cards, determine type, size, and quantity of cable and materials needed for completion of work assignments.
• Conduct annual inspections and monitor testing; troubleshoot and make necessary adjustments and/or repairs to components of traffic signals, flashing beacons, Road Weather Information System (RWIS) hardware, and electrical connections, highway lighting up to 480-volt systems, tunnel fire alarm and notification systems, devices, and components using alternating current (AC), direct current (DC), and solar power, and other electrical devices.
• Utilize diagnostic test equipment to determine scope of repair and/or initiate and maintain contact with Ohio Utilities Protection Services (OUPS) to determine location of existing utilities prior to installation of cabling or poles and review OUPS tickets and determine validity through computer software and communication with contractors/excavators.
• Responsible for face-to-face contact with public, school officials, etc. during repairs and/or maintenance.
• Act as lead worker over lower-level Traffic Technician(s) and/or other employees assigned to work crew in maintenance, rebuilding, repair, and installation of traffic signals, highway lighting, and related electrical items by explaining and enforcing policies and procedures.
• Contact equipment manufacturers and/or suppliers to discuss hardware and/or software problems arising in equipment testing or cabinet wiring.

Requirements

• Undergraduate core in electrical engineering or engineering and transportation technology; 12 months' experience troubleshooting/maintaining and/or repairing of electrical circuits and traffic signal components; valid Class B commercial driver’s license without air brake restriction required.
• Associate core in electrical engineering or engineering and transportation technology; 18 months' experience troubleshooting/maintaining and/or repairing of electrical circuits and traffic signal components; valid Class B commercial driver’s license without air brake restriction required.
• 36 months' training and/or experience in troubleshooting/maintaining and/or repairing electrical circuits and traffic signal components; valid Class B commercial driver’s license without air brake restriction required.
• 24 months' experience as a Traffic Signal Technician 1; valid Class B commercial driver’s license without air brake restriction required.
• Equivalent of minimum class qualifications for employment noted above.
