About the Role

The Traffic Safety Engineer is responsible for researching, investigating, and evaluating requests brought by the public regarding traffic safety issues. The incumbent will conduct field investigations to review existing roadway conditions, including sight distance, signs, traffic signals, pavement markings, and other roadway features. The position additionally reviews traffic data, such as speed, traffic volume, accident and other roadway data. The incumbent will also respond to requests from citizens related to traffic safety issues.

Essential Duties

  • Analyze traffic safety issues, identify potential roadway improvements, analyze results of potential roadway improvements, and implement recommendations in support of goals
  • Prepare and review various reports and traffic safety studies that include recommendations for safety improvements, preparation of traffic signal warrant analysis, evaluation of traffic signal left turn phasing, and evaluation of multi-way stop control at intersections
  • Manage or assist with the maintenance of the Annual Roadway Traffic Volume Program that includes ordering traffic volume counts and updating the traffic volume data for County-maintained roads posted on the County's website
  • Manage the County's Speed Ordinance program, including the development, maintenance, and implementation of speed limit changes
  • Manage the Automated Traffic Enforcement Safety Device (ATESD) Program
  • Prepare and analyze collision diagrams using crash reports
  • Research innovative traffic safety measures
  • Provide technical assistance to other County staff, outside contractors, and the general public regarding traffic safety issues
  • Monitor work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures
  • Meet with stakeholders, citizens, and property owners as needed

Public Speaking Duties

Communicate effectively and engage with staff, citizens, leadership and elected officials as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Engineer I - Grade C421 - $66,331 - $109,448
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering

Engineer II - Grade C431 - $72,136 - $119,025
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering AND one year of related experience

Engineer III - Grade C451 - $85,311 - $140,763
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering AND two years of progressively responsible engineering experience

Engineer IV - Grade D611 - $92,777 - $153,083
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering AND four years of progressively responsible engineering experience

Salary will be dependent on education and experience.

Other Requirements

  • Valid Driver's License
  • Eligible for a hybrid telework schedule after an initial probationary period and individual approval
