Summary
Drive safer, smarter transportation as a Traffic Project Engineer at DOWL. Take a lead role in designing and analyzing traffic systems that keep communities moving safely and efficiently. You'll work on large, complex civil and transportation projects, performing tasks such as traffic counts, engineering calculations, traffic modeling and simulation, illumination design, and the design of both temporary and permanent traffic control devices.
Responsibilities
- Lead technical efforts on a variety of project types, sizes and complexities
- Produce technical reports and memos, traffic analyses, specifications, construction quantity calculations and cost estimates, design documents and construction plans, breakdown of costs and scope of work, schedules, and proposal technical approach
- Perform quality control of moderately complex deliverables
- Mentor others on technical tasks and skills
- Lead small teams (1-2 people) to complete challenging assignments
- Provide clear communication and direction to others
- Develop budgets and schedules for complex tasks; break down complex projects into logical tasks
- Prioritize multiple assignments to successfully deliver all assigned projects on time and on budget
- Interpret, select, and employ design codes including: AASHTO Greenbook, FHWA Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), ITE Trip Generation Manual and Handbook, ITE Parking Generation Manual, TRB Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), TRB Highway Safety Manual (HSM), state-specific design and specifications manuals, ANSI/IES RP-8, NCHRP 765 & 562, NFPA 70 National Electric Code, and NACTO Urban Design Guide
- Actively mentor others on interpreting design codes; understand limitations of design codes
- Engage in frequent direct communications with clients to resolve technical issues on moderate to complex projects
- Lead client project meetings; understand appropriate messaging and legal risks
- Perform advanced levels of technical work on large, complex projects as a trusted technical member of the market sector
- Operate with a high level of autonomy; review the work of others
- May perform some project management tasks
Supervisory Duties
- Oversee team operations and the daily workflow of the team
- Organize workflow and ensure that employees understand their duties or delegated tasks
- Recruit and hire new employees
- Implement training for new hires and identify training opportunities for current staff
- Communicate information from leadership to employees and vice versa
- Monitor employee productivity and provide constructive feedback and coaching
- Set goals for performance and deadlines in ways that comply with company's plans and vision and communicate them to employees
- Provide constructive and timely performance evaluations
- Decide on reward and promotion based on performance
- Handle discipline and termination of employees as needed and in accordance with company policy
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree preferred
- 6 years of experience required (5 years with advanced degree)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required
- Valid driver's license required
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
- Advanced proficiency in market sector software (AGi, SIDRA, Synchro, AutoCAD, Microstation, Vissim, GuideSign, AutoTurn)
- Fully proficient understanding of technical fundamentals related to the market sector
- Advanced understanding of scopes, schedules, and budgets
- Ability to sit, talk, hear, stand, walk, and use hands regularly; occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; close vision and ability to adjust focus required
