About the role

The Traffic Management Specialist (TMS) role involves managing traffic congestion on roadways throughout North Carolina. Key responsibilities include monitoring and detecting traffic incidents, responding to incidents, documenting details, and interfacing with emergency responders and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Detect and monitor traffic incidents using congestion maps, traffic cameras, responder radios, and other technologies.
  • Determine appropriate responses based on incident characteristics, traffic impacts, available resources, and other factors.
  • Document incident details, response activity, and other critical data in real-time.
  • Publish incident details on the DriveNC.gov website and create traveler information to help motorists avoid impacted roadways.
  • Activate electronic roadside message boards to warn motorists of hazardous travel conditions and reroute traffic.
  • Seek out incident details and relay critical information to NCDOT and other emergency responders in real-time.
  • Dispatch NCDOT's incident management assistance patrol (IMAP) and coordinate with NCDOT field staff including maintenance and traffic signal technicians.
  • Manage statewide alerts for missing persons (Amber & Silver Alerts) and law enforcement alerts (Blue & Fugitive Alerts).

Requirements

  • High school diploma (or equivalent)
  • Six months related experience in dispatch center or 911 operations or comparable relevant experience preferred
  • Experience in a position involving public contact and telephone responsibilities preferred
  • Proficient with computer skills
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills required
  • Good command of the English language
  • Aptitude for geography and maps

Qualifications

  • Must be willing to work second shift (1:45PM – 10:15PM)
  • Training will take between 5-7 weeks and be administered in the morning schedule Monday through Friday
  • Willingness to work weekends and holidays as needed

Pay

Expected compensation range is between $20.00 - $22.00 hourly depending on skills, experience, and geographical location.

Schedule

The role requires working second shift (1:45PM – 10:15PM) with training taking place during the day on weekdays.
