About the Role

As a Traffic Engineer II at Bowman, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of public and private projects, both locally and in other states, giving you broad exposure and meaningful experience in roadway and highway design. You will execute complex technical transportation engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria for transportation and infrastructure projects while assisting in developing sustainable transportation solutions to reduce traffic congestion, promote multiple modes of transportation, support land development, and improve safety for all users.

Responsibilities

  • Receive general instruction on key objectives and direction as needed, especially for complex assignments or new approaches.
  • Complete work using advanced engineering techniques and design principles, reviewed by senior staff for sound professional judgment.
  • Review work produced by junior staff for quality assurance.
  • Serve as a lead in the technical direction of less experienced engineers, providing mentorship and delegating assignments.
  • Work closely with senior members to learn and assist with transportation engineering and planning.
  • Assist with marketing the firm’s capabilities to establish new clients and enhance relationships.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines and internal services/groups/offices as necessary.
  • Prepare maps, graphics, data analysis, field reviews, and research for public and client meetings.
  • Contribute to stakeholder and public engagement efforts, develop solutions to complex problems, and present recommendations.
  • Prepare engineering plans, reports, grant applications, and associated funding-related services.
  • Participate in construction-related assignments and draft technical documentation (transmittals, memos, proposals, etc.).
  • Prepare reports, plans, specifications, construction schedules, cost estimates, permits, and/or designs for projects.
  • Coordinate and conduct field visits, ensuring appropriate data collection and observations.
  • Direct tasks on projects and monitor progress for technical accuracy, schedule, and budget adherence.
  • Provide internal and external technical presentations and quality control for assigned projects.
  • Assist with client and outside agency communication and attend project/public meetings.
  • Develop and maintain accurate and organized project files.
  • Follow firm goals, SOPs, and QA/QC procedures, and assist in reviewing technical work of other staff.
  • Mentor junior staff and lead analyses or concept design aspects of engineering projects (e.g., traffic studies, corridor/regional studies, safety studies).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field required.
  • Completed coursework in transportation engineering and/or highway design preferred.
  • Three or more (3+) years of professional engineering experience with an emphasis on transportation engineering or related field.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam (EIT) preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) Registration or ability to receive within six (6) months preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Valid state driver’s license and ability to pass a motor vehicle check or reliable transportation to/from the office and/or project sites strongly preferred.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

  • Primarily indoor professional office environment (may include bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic).
  • Frequent and prolonged use of standard office equipment (computers, phones, photocopiers, etc.).
  • Occasional outdoor work environment (may include adverse weather, varying temperatures, excessive noise, or potential hazards).
  • Mobility around job/construction sites (walking, bending, crawling, climbing, squatting, or kneeling) and wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Primarily local travel during the business day; some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.
  • Occasional lifting or carrying up to 20 pounds, pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds, or reaching outward/above shoulder.
