About the role
The Traffic Control Supervisor oversees operations related to traffic control including road and highway construction projects. The Traffic Control Supervisor is responsible for setting up and maintaining temporary traffic control in work zones. Their duties include using traffic control devices to divert drivers and pedestrians, monitoring road repairs, and supervising teams as they install equipment.
Responsibilities
- Follow all safety rules and regulations of the Company and particularly the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
- Supervise/assist TCT/laborer/driver in traffic control responsibilities.
- Cookordinate TCT assignment with dispatch.
- Operate company trucks to transport materials and equipment to job sites.
- Drive MOT (Management of Traffic) vehicle to and from projects and on work sites.
- Drive TMA (Truck Mounted Attenuator) vehicle to and from projects and on work sites to protect workers and work zones.
- Place temporary construction signs in work areas.
- Set up traffic cones and other traffic safety devices in work areas.
- Monitor the work zone throughout the shift to ensure items remain in their proper locations.
- Collect and load traffic control items at the beginning and end of shifts.
- Install, remove, and reset delineators, signs, posts, and supports.
- Make deliveries, pick-ups and job checks in a safe, efficient, and timely manner.
- Maintain accurate and timely Pre-Trip and Post Trip Inspection Paperwork.
- Efficiently communicate with all levels of people - employees, customers, accident information, maintenance service schedules, etc.
- Conduct themselves in a manner that promotes a professional and respectful atmosphere and ensure that the service encounter with the customer is an exceptional experience.
- Perform a needs assessment when speaking with customers to translate their requests into our related products.
- Maintain delivery/pickup tickets.
- Learn/Responsible for safe lifting, loading, unloading of equipment to and from trucks.
- Keep company vehicles clean and orderly, informing management of any safety concerns or vehicle problems.
- Arrive to work site on time wearing proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), e.g., hard hats, safety shoes, safety glasses, gloves, masks, and earplugs as required, and when applicable, a respirator.
- Adhere to all Company Policies and Procedures.
- Direct traffic at construction sites to ensure the safety of workers, pedestrians, and motorists.
- Set up and maintain traffic control devices such as cones, signs, and barricades.
- Communicate effectively with construction crews to coordinate traffic control efforts.
- Monitor traffic patterns and adjust control measures as needed.
- Report any incidents or issues to supervisors promptly.
Requirements
- Pass medical fit-for-duty test; hold/obtain DOT medical card.
- Ability to read maps and knowledge of local streets.
- Basic reading and writing ability to comply with road signs, complete paperwork, and knowledge of federal and state motor carrier safety regulations.
- Must be able to read plans and ensure traffic control plans are implemented and maintained.
- Good knowledge of state and local roadways and experience operating delivery vehicles of varying sizes.
- Requires technical thinking, and the ability to read standards and schematics.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with aptitude in building relationships with team members inside and out of the organization.
- A strong knowledge of the traffic control/construction industry.
- Previous experience in traffic control or construction environment desired.
- Familiarity with construction inspection processes.
- Good decision making, analytical, and problem-solving abilities with a high attention to detail.
- Self-motivated; capable of taking initiative, successfully handle and prioritize multiple competing assignments and effectively manage deadlines.
- Excellent organization, time management and follow up skills and the ability to manage several projects simultaneously.
- Must be comfortable and effective working in an environment with changing demands, delays and responding to unexpected situations.
- Proficient user of Microsoft applications including Word, Excel and Outlook; willingness and ability to learn.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills required; ability to maintain a high level of professionalism when interacting with all customers (internal/external).
- Excellent interpersonal communications skills including a proven ability to listen and understand customers, as well as ability to work in a team environment.
- Willing to travel as needed.
Success Factors
- Experience in construction site traffic control is required.
- Experience working in the construction industry or the utility distribution industry highly desirable.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid State of Residence Driver’s License is required within two weeks of employment.
- Candidates must pass criminal and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) background checks and pass a pre-employment drug screen.
