Responsibilities
- Safely direct traffic using hand signals, signs, and stop/slow paddles
- Set up, position, and remove traffic control devices such as cones, barricades, and warning signs
- Maintain traffic flow by adjusting control methods based on traffic conditions
- Communicate clearly with crew members, supervisors, and the public to coordinate traffic movement
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, company policies, and traffic control plans
- Maintain a safe work zone by identifying and addressing potential hazards
- Wear and properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE), including high-visibility gear
- Assist with general labor tasks related to roadwork or construction when needed
- Report incidents, unsafe conditions, or equipment issues promptly to supervisors
- Remain alert and focused in a fast-paced, high-risk environment near moving traffic
Qualifications
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (often required)
- Certification in traffic control/flagging (e.g., OSHA or state-approved flagger certification)
- Ability to understand and follow traffic control plans and safety procedures
- Strong communication skills to interact with drivers, coworkers, and supervisors
- Basic knowledge of road construction safety practices and traffic laws
- Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift equipment, and work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Dependability and punctuality
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings, nights, weekends, and overtime
