About the Role

Under administrative direction, this position performs administrative and supervisory work in the planning, organization, coordination, and direction of school district maintenance, repair, and construction activities associated with one or more of the craft civil or mechanical trades. Areas include HVAC, carpentry, painting, electrical, asphalt and concrete, refrigerant recovery and recycling, roofing, pest control, horticulture, property control, metal fabrication, and communication systems. The role is distinguished by an advanced degree of technical knowledge and skills. Incumbents may be assigned to a specific functional area such as construction management.

Responsibilities

• Respond to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous, and empathetic manner, representing OCPS positively.
• Provide planning, organization, coordination, and direction for school district maintenance, repair, and construction activities in one or more craft trades.
• Collaborate with district maintenance and construction personnel, other departments, contractors, and school administration to plan and coordinate tasks and projects.
• Review and assist in preparing contracts, bids, and specifications for vendors, contractors, or service providers.
• Review maintenance, service, repair, or construction orders and requests, as well as preliminary plans, to determine feasibility and advisability.
• Conduct job site inspections to identify project specifications, including manpower allocation, crews, equipment, and materials.
• Prioritize and coordinate project specifics; supervise and delegate tasks to assigned personnel.
• Inspect progress of ongoing projects; report project status and concerns to upper-level management; ensure adherence to approved plans and specifications.
• Plan and schedule major repairs, renovations, and construction projects to minimize disruption to school district activities.
• Interact with private consultants/contractors; inspect and monitor contractual work for compliance with plans and specifications.
• Assist in unit management by preparing budget documents/estimates, monitoring expenditures, developing plans and schedules, and formulating policies and procedures.
• Recommend personnel actions, such as hiring, promotions, disciplinary actions, and merit increases; conduct routine performance evaluations.
• Ensure adherence to preventive maintenance schedules and district safety and accident prevention policies.
• Ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, building, and safety standards for public school systems’ construction, maintenance, and repair activities.
• Review and prepare records, logs, and reports, including attendance records, purchase orders, invoices, cost estimates, material requests, inventory reports, and service records.
• Prioritize unscheduled maintenance or repair orders; respond to emergency or critical incidents to resolve or prevent hazardous conditions.
• Oversee the proper care, use, and maintenance of equipment, tools, materials, and vehicles; ensure safe equipment operation.
• Stay updated on current technology relevant to the role; attend training to maintain required skill levels.
• Maintain timely and accurate information as part of job responsibilities.

Requirements

• Vocational/technical training in one or more craft civil or mechanical trades.
• Minimum of five years of progressively knowledgeable and technically skilled work in the primary trade, with some experience in a lead worker capacity demonstrating coordination, delegation, and inspection skills.
• Demonstrated technical knowledge of applicable laws, codes, ordinances, or regulatory standards governing the trade.
• Experience in a large commercial or industrial institution is preferred.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license.
• Current certification and/or license in two of the following areas: Landscaping, Herbicide Application, Pesticide Application, Arborist, or Backflow.

• Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Ability to operate and control electric and gas-powered service equipment, standard hand-held maintenance tools, and computers with software such as Microsoft Office, Outlook, and SAP.
• Verbal Aptitude: Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, design, and advisory data and information.
• Mathematical Aptitude: Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, calculate decimals and percentages, and utilize geometric principles and formulas.
• Functional Reasoning: Ability to apply principles of rational systems; interpret instructions in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; exercise independent judgment to modify methods and standards for varying objectives.
• Situational Reasoning: Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in evaluating information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Physical Ability: Tasks may involve exerting very heavy physical effort, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects up to 100 pounds (occasionally heavier).
• Sensory Requirements: Tasks may require color discrimination, sound perception, depth perception, visual perception, and oral communication ability.
• Environmental Factors: Potential exposure to adverse conditions such as dust, fumes, wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, temperature extremes, electrical currents, bright or dim lighting, and toxic/poisonous agents during inspections.
