Trades Supervisor (Carpenter)

About the role

This position acts as a working supervisor directing skilled and semi-skilled employees in the carpentry trade. The incumbent plans, coordinates, and participates in the construction, renovation, maintenance, and repair of buildings, facilities, and structures.

Responsibilities

• Set schedules, estimates of project costs, and timelines.
• Prepare material lists and requisitions of supplies, tools, and equipment.
• Oversee all phases of construction projects.
• Provide hands-on support while directing and controlling project phases.
• Assign plans and design specifications to appropriate staff.
• Provide technical instruction, mentoring, and on-the-job training to subordinate staff and apprentices.
• Coordinate carpentry projects with other maintenance trades including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, masonry, and painting.
• Maintain records of labor, materials, equipment usage, work orders, and project completion.
• Interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications; review concerns with Central Office engineering staff.
• Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with building codes, agency standards, safety regulations, and quality workmanship.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA, New York State safety standards, environmental regulations, and agency policies.
• Respond to emergency maintenance situations; participate in after-hours or inclement weather response.
• Oversee contractor work, verify contract compliance, and coordinate projects with engineers, architects, and facility managers.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• One year of experience as a skilled journey-level carpenter subsequent to the completion of apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.
• Valid New York State driver's license.
• Ability to negotiate difficult terrain and work in remote areas or adverse weather conditions.
• Availability for travel, overtime, weekends, holidays, and emergency response, including after-hours emergencies.
• Ability to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.

Pay

For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations, and negotiated union contracts.
