About the role

SUNY Brockport is accepting applications for Trades Specialist - Electrician position. The Trades Specialist - Electricians share responsibility of all campus electrical systems, and equipment maintenance and repair. This specific position is contingent permanent.

Job Functions

  • Performs journey level electrical work and supervises others in the repair, maintenance and installation of electrical systems and equipment, following applicable electric code regulations and safety procedures
  • Operates, troubleshoots, and maintains/repairs the campus utility systems including generators, HVAC equipment, fire alarms, and building management systems
  • Effectively uses and procures parts, operator/repair manuals, and performs/recommends possible repair solutions
  • Documents and reports repair and maintenance needs including detailed sketches and part orders and oversees or performs repairs to completion
  • Gives verbal instructions and/or demonstrates proper and safe methods of performing electrical work and the use of electrician tools and equipment
  • Executes, observes, and/or inspects work while in progress. Ensures that the job is done properly and that electrical codes are followed
  • Keeps accurate and detailed records of all generator maintenance, inspection and testing as required by EPA, DEC, and Facilities & Planning
  • Performs basic generator (diesel/natural gas) troubleshooting tasks, including but not limited to oil, battery, exhaust pipe, starter, and cooling system component changes. Troubleshoots and repairs of AC & DC electrical equipment including transfer switch repairs, coil and relay replacements, load testing and identifying connected loads
  • Coordinates and performs routinely scheduled load tests with campus departments and outside vendors as needed
  • Coordinates or performs corrective and preventive maintenance to components of the generator system

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of electrical theory as applied to the electrical trades
  • Working knowledge of practices and techniques of the electrical trade
  • Working knowledge of the mathematics of the electrical trades
  • Working knowledge of applicable standards and electrical code regulations
  • As assigned, working knowledge of the operation and repair of digital timing devices used in traffic control signal systems
  • Basic knowledge of electronic theory and practice as applied to the electrical trades
  • Assigned, working knowledge of the rules and regulations of the facility governing the activities of persons for whom the State has custody or responsibility under the supervision of an Electrician
  • Absolutely required: Strong AC electrical background required. Demonstrated three phase AC electrical background necessary including use of test equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions
  • Demonstrated experience to diagnose various mechanical and electrical equipment failures and recommend possible solutions
  • Demonstrated experience to comprehend and effectively use parts, operator, and repair manuals
  • Willing to participate in training necessary to operate and maintain all equipment related to this position
  • Previous successful experience and/or technical training with generator maintenance and repair program
  • Basic computer skills for work orders and PM schedules
  • Available for scheduled and unscheduled overtime to support 24/7 utility responsibilities
  • Knowledge or ability to obtain it to maintain all equipment related to this trade
  • Work in a diverse college community in a team-oriented environment
  • Obtain Asbestos Supervisor Certification within six (6) months of hire

Qualifications

  • Non-competitive: Four years of full-time experience in electrical trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in the electrical trade at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Electrician) traineeship or a two-year electrical training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program. Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of "C" or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.
