About the role
The overall function of this position is to perform routine preventive maintenance and repair of small engines and mobile equipment. This position is located in District 03 of the Department of Transportation and Development, Lafayette, LA, and reports directly to the Mechanic Supervisor A. The incumbent must be self-motivated, able to perform duties with minimal supervision, and interpret unforeseen conditions as they arise. The incumbent will participate in DOTD structured training programs and attend continuing education classes and conferences as required.
While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.
Responsibilities
- Performs tire replacement, repair, and rotation for various mobile equipment.
- Assists Overhaul and Master Mechanics on complex or difficult repairs such as repairing brakes, cleaning parts, and minor welding.
- Performs minor assembly of parts.
- Performs preventative maintenance on passenger vehicles, small engines, and some heavy equipment by checking and replacing oils, fluids, hoses, spark plugs, belts, and other miscellaneous parts.
- Makes regular maintenance checks and performs preventive maintenance such as oil changes, lubrication, filter and radiator hose changes, and proper fluid level maintenance to keep warranties in effect.
- May operate district-wide shuttle truck to deliver mail, materials, parts, and supplies between offices in the District.
- Removes and cleans fuel tanks.
- May be required to perform other duties as necessary, including emergency/disaster support activities.

- No experience or training is required.
- Must be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to interpret unforeseen conditions as they arise.
- Must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies and procedures.
