About the role
The Mechanic Apprenticeship is designed to build technical skills in preventative maintenance tasks and gain hands-on experience in corrective repairs of oil & gas mechanical equipment. Apprentices will work with a range of equipment and systems such as reciprocating engines and compressors, centrifugal compressors, vapor recovery units (VRUs) & air compressors, centrifugal pumps, and more, providing valuable exposure to real-world applications in the industry.
Through a combination of structured training and immersive on-the-job learning, apprentices are introduced to operating, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining oil and gas production in partnership with Field Operations, Integrated Operations Center, and Maintenance and Reliability team members. The position provides direct exposure to the Chevron Way Values and the strong safety culture that defines the Shale & Tight Business Unit.
Apprentices will work closely with a dedicated mentor to develop a broad understanding of how teams and functions work together to safely deliver production and minimize downtime. They will also participate in computer-based and classroom training. This is a temporary 6-month field-based position.
Responsibilities
- Perform preventative maintenance tasks on oil & gas mechanical equipment.
- Conduct corrective repairs on mechanical equipment, including reciprocating engines and compressors, centrifugal compressors, vapor recovery units (VRUs), air compressors, and centrifugal pumps.
- Operate, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain oil and gas production equipment.
- Collaborate with Field Operations, Integrated Operations Center, and Maintenance and Reliability teams.
- Work day and night shifts, weekends, and holidays based on assigned schedule.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Ability and willingness to work day and night shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- Live within 50 miles of the work location or willingness to relocate within 50 miles for the duration of the apprenticeship.
- Commitment to Incident and Injury Free Operations with a proven record in Safety and Reliability (this is a Safety Sensitive Position).
Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
- Applied Associates of Science degree (Mechanical Industrial Maintenance, Diesel Mechanic, Industrial Maintenance, Mechanical Technology, or mechanically related field) OR equivalent education or military training OR completion of a certificate program (Mechanical Industrial Maintenance, Diesel Mechanic, Industrial Maintenance, Mechanical Technology, or mechanically related field) with previous oil & gas or similar industry experience.
- Minimum GPA of 2.5 in core classes (transcripts must be uploaded to the applicant’s online profile).
- Previous experience with reliability, safety, and/or environmental process-related issues.
- Previous experience with pneumatic/electronic instrumentation.
- Basic knowledge in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and an aptitude for learning new software applications.
- Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with a diverse team of coworkers, contractors, and internal and external customers.
Assessment
As part of the application process, you will be required to take an assessment that measures aptitude and work styles. The assessment takes approximately 45 minutes to complete in one sitting. Progress is saved if you exit early. You will be directed to the testing portal immediately after submitting your application and will have 72 hours to complete the assessment. Your score will remain valid for 180 days. If you reapply for another position requiring the Operations Assessment within this timeframe, you will need to resubmit your previous results.
