Trades Apprentice, Electrician, or Electrician Specialist

About This Position

This position is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing traffic signal control devices that help keep Louisiana's roadways safe. This is primarily an outdoor position, and employees should be comfortable working in the heat, humidity, and various weather conditions. The incumbent operates equipment such as bucket trucks, pole trucks, directional drilling machines, trenchers, pavement saws, and vehicles while performing traffic signal construction, repairs, and maintenance. The position also performs minor repairs and routine maintenance on equipment and vehicles used to complete daily tasks.

Responsibilities

• Assembles and installs traffic signals in accordance with plans and the current LA DOTD Standards and Specifications.
• Installs, repairs, and/or modifies new traffic signals and flashing beacons.
• Installs electrical service equipment for traffic signal control devices.
• Erects new signal poles by using a derrick digger to bore holes in the ground for setting wood poles and building concrete foundations for steel poles.
• Uses bucket trucks for installing span wire between poles to support signals, signs, and various cables.
• Lashes various sizes of electrical control cable to spans for connecting signals to control equipment.
• Installs telephone cables and fiber optic cables to provide communications within DOTD and for other state agencies.
• Utilizes electrical testing meters during testing and troubleshooting of electrical service and control circuits.
• Uses locators to locate existing underground traffic signal wiring and devices that could be damaged during construction projects.
• Inspects all materials used by the signal personnel on a daily basis.
• Assists the Foreman in the construction and maintenance of traffic signals, including the installation of telephone cables, fiber optic cables, twisted pair cables, and electronic or computer components to operate traffic signal control devices.

Requirements

• No experience or training is required to apply.
• A Chauffeur's License (Class D) is required to begin employment.
• The ability to work out of town every week is required (lodging and per-diem provided).

Compensation

Starting biweekly rates depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s):

• Trades Apprentice: $16.06/hourly plus an additional $2.00 for every hour worked (valid Class "D" Chauffeur's License required before start date).
• Electrician: $19.67/hourly plus an additional $2.00 for every hour worked (valid Class "D" Chauffeur's License required before start date).
• Electrician Specialist: $21.05/hourly plus an additional $2.00 for every hour worked (valid Class "A" or "B" CDL required before start date).

Work Location & Appointment Details

Appointment Type: Probational, Promotional, or Job Appointment. The duty station of this position will be determined by the locale of the incumbent; however, the position may require frequent travel and overnight stays in neighboring parishes. As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a Trades Apprentice, Electrician or Electrician Specialist depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s).
