About the Role

Leads and assists in the construction, installation, and maintenance of communications towers and support structures and related telecommunications equipment. Tower Technicians work irregular hours, travel frequently, and work at great heights in extreme weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Climbs and works on communications towers for the purpose of installing, replacing, and repairing antenna systems equipment.
  • Uses and cares for hand tools and mechanical equipment.
  • Ensures crew members comply with company and customer safety requirements.
  • Verifies and ensures all tools and rigging gear are safe to use.
  • Completes required daily Job Safety Analysis (JSA’s).
  • Understands hazards associated with tower climbing, construction equipment, and working on or near energized lines and equipment.
  • Climbs tall structures (100 feet or more) with a 50 lb. load.
  • Develops and writes a detailed Method of Procedure (MOP) for a job/project.
  • Analyzes situations accurately and adopts an appropriate course of action.
  • Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Follows instructions accurately and completes assigned tasks.
  • Recognizes safety hazards and performs duties in a safe manner.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly environment adhering to company policies and industry regulations (OSHA).
  • Experienced with custom tower rigging techniques and performs tape drops.
  • Proficient with test equipment (sweeps, PIM, fiber testing, etc.).
  • Performs GPS antenna alignment (Sunsight AAT).
  • Installs antennas, RRH’s, ground kits, and RET systems.
  • Troubleshoots RET systems and GPS antennas.
  • Runs required lines to the top of the tower; grounds coax lines and builds connectors.
  • Stacks towers and installs sector mounts.
  • Basic knowledge of microwave dish and radio installations.
  • Leads a 4-person tower crew safely and within budgetary requirements.
  • Ensures jobs meet company and customer quality standards and comply with COP requirements.
  • Safely operates a winch/cathead.
  • Troubleshoots tower lighting systems.
  • Performs TMA gain testing and RF noise floor testing.
  • Acts as a team lead and mentor to less experienced Tower Technicians.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 3 to 4 years of industry experience.
  • Excellent communication, reading, and writing skills (English).
  • Good computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Clean driving record, valid driver’s license, and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to accommodate out-of-town travel if required.
  • ComTrain, OSHA 10, RF Awareness Training, and First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Experience with Anritsu Site Master, Andrew, PPC, tower mapping, and antenna equipment.
  • Experience stacking self-support towers, installing waveguide, antennas, and microwave dishes.
  • RF awareness, replacement, and maintenance (e.g., coax, jumpers, TMAs, connectors, weatherproofing).
  • Highly organized with the ability to report verbally and in writing to the Tower Foreman.

Skills

  • Working knowledge of basic hand tools, mechanical equipment, and electro-mechanical equipment.
  • Self-motivated and able to learn quickly.
  • Ability to lift over 70 pounds.

  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts, in high, precarious places, and in outside weather conditions.
  • Regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
  • Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and extreme cold.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
