About the role
Under general supervision, this position designs, programs, and builds cavity dies and production tooling and fixtures in accordance with quality standards. Ensures that documentation, tooling, and parts are correctly matched to paperwork.
Responsibilities
- Build tooling with the proper balance of time and cost to make a product that is as close to final dimensional needs as possible with minimal rework.
- Demonstrate leadership ability and set good examples for the department.
- Increase productivity and decrease scrap and rework, plus maintain production schedule.
- Demonstrate cooperation when assistance is needed by the management and possess the ability to train incoming personnel.
- Know, understand, and be able to instruct others in the Safety rules and policies of the plant.
- Demonstrate the ability to design, program, and build dies at all levels of complexity, for example, Wax dies, ceramic core dies, inspection fixtures, straightening fixtures, and all other types of permanent and temporary tooling.
- Demonstrate the ability to quote the design and manufacturing cost of new tools and reworks.
- Demonstrate the ability to supervise and troubleshoot in-house tooling projects.
- Clarify tooling instructions with design and engineering personnel.
- Maintain the requirements and skills of all previous levels for that department, including the Quality Systems, and make and maintain efficiency standards.
- Possess the ability to make cost analysis for decision-making, and exercise good judgment in helping the company to become more profitable.
- Possess the ability to basically run the department efficiently with a minimum of outside assistance.
- Maintain outside toolmaker sources, evaluate their work, and determine a system of cost analysis for approval of their charges.
- Explain and be able to compute the efficiency system established in the area/department.
- Demonstrate the ability to plan, organize, instruct, supervise, and gather feedback on large tooling programs (Project Manager).
- Must also be able to communicate with tool vendors, such as giving instructions and answering tooling related questions.
Qualifications and Additional Requirements
- Experience with injection molding
- Experience with MasterCAM
- Proficient at CNC Programming; candidate must be able to fully program and operate a CNC without assistance
- Able to perform complex mathematical calculations
- Able to use complex measuring devices and fixtures
- Experience with toolmaking is a nice to have, but is not necessary
