Tooling Engineer 1
About the role
This position supports the Tooling department for a leading organization. The role involves designing industrial tools, dies, gauges, and other equipment for production and experimental use. The ideal candidate will work in a dynamic environment, collaborating with manufacturing, operations, and engineering teams to ensure tooling meets quality, cost, schedule, and safety requirements.
Responsibilities
- Develop tooling concepts and support equipment for new and existing programs.
- Design tooling and equipment, including engineering drawings, inspection requirements, and verification plans.
- Review designs for manufacturability, fit, form, and function.
- Identify and mitigate safety risks in accordance with company and government standards.
- Develop basic data and make preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes for design proposals.
- Interface with internal customers and design review teams to ensure requirements are met.
- Cook with manufacturing, operations, and process engineering to support program objectives.
- Manage tooling projects, including cost, schedule, procurement, and fabrication.
- Check completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, and accuracy.
- Identify design errors and recommend revisions or improvements.
- Support vendors during fabrication and inspect fabricated tooling for drawing compliance.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and investigations related to root cause analysis.
Requirements
- Education: A Bachelor's Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline is required.
- Experience: Candidates must have experience with modeling and drafting on CAD software tools. Knowledge of manufacturing, fabrication processes, and machine shop practices is necessary. Experience with drawing release criteria for completeness, correctness of materials, and conformity to standards is also required.
- Technical Skills: Knowledge and application of GD&T (ASME Y14.5-2018) is required. Proficiency with 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) software such as Siemens NX or CATIA is needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Active DOD Secret clearance.
- Experience in an aerospace manufacturing environment.
- Experience in engineering, design, and fabrication of special tooling and support equipment.
- Experience in design and fabrication of tooling used in the manufacture of composite parts.
- Ability to evaluate vendor capabilities for tooling and aerospace part production.
- Experience participating in development projects and establishing tooling statements of work.
- Experience with a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system.
- Experience with stress analysis using hand calculations and FEMAP/NASTRAN.
- A Professional Engineering License is preferred.
