About the role
The Tool and Mold Maker specializes in skilled 3‑ and 5‑axis machining to build, modify, maintain, calibrate, and repair roto‑molding molds and fixtures, and to produce custom machinery parts and maintenance components. The role involves working with engineers to develop and modify tools, working from blueprints, specifications, and diagrams, and applying knowledge of tool and mold design, CAM programming, shop mathematics, metal properties, milling and lathe setup, fixturing, and layout to fabricate and repair aluminum roto‑molding molds, production fixturing, machining fixturing, and custom production machinery and maintenance parts.
Responsibilities
- Fabrication: Fabricate and repair cast and extruded roto‑molding molds, assembly and machining fixtures, and gauges; lay out metal stock; prepare and operate 3‑ and 5‑axis CNC and manual mills and lathes; machine parts for custom machinery and maintenance.
- Planning and Preparation: Study specifications (blueprints, sketches, models) to visualize the product and determine machining sequence; compute dimensions; plan setups, machine fixtures, and produce CNC programs in Fusion CAM.
- Machining and Processing: Measure, mark, and scribe metal stock; set up and operate 3‑ and 5‑axis manual and CNC milling machines and lathes; lift and secure machined parts for work.
- Safety Compliance: Comply with all safety and work rules and regulations for the assigned area, following all required safety practices.
- Design and Consultation (Optional): Examine existing tools and recommend design modifications; develop specifications or draw/sketch designs for specialty tools from general descriptions.
Requirements
- Proven experience programming CNC machinery (Fanuc controls, CNC milling machines, CNC lathes, or 5‑axis CNC machines).
- Minimum 5 years experience in precision tool making, prototyping, and manufacturing unique, custom parts.
- Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing) standards.
- Mechanical knowledge with experience in metal machining processes such as electrical discharge machining (EDM) preferred.
- Skilled in measuring parts using precision instruments: micrometers, bore gauges, calipers, dial indicators, and coordinate measuring machines (CMM).
- Understanding of lean manufacturing principles to promote continuous improvement in production workflows.
- Excellent math skills for calculating dimensions, feeds, speeds, and tolerances required for precision machining.
- Physical capabilities: lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs; repetitive limb motion; bend, twist, squat, and reach; stand and walk for long periods; work comfortably in an excessive noise environment.
