What To Expect
Tool and die makers play a valuable role in the manufacturing of machine parts that mold and aid innovation. As one of these specialty machinists, tool and die makers can see the impact their career has in the world and in various industries.
Apprenticeship Details
- 8,000 hours of on-the-job training with a mentor
- Courses at Grand Rapids Community College paid for by Tesla
- Federally recognized journey worker certification upon completion
- Stackable college certifications for further education
What You'll Do
- Shadow mentors in the die build/tryout area
- Perform tasks similar to mentors, demonstrating progression over four years
- Manual and CNC machining on mills and lathes
- Operating typical manual machines
- Producing a wide variety of components and assemblies
- Performing equipment maintenance and repair
- Maintaining a safe working environment
Qualifications
- Strong mechanical aptitude and math skills
- Experience working with hand tools and welding
- Strong communication and writing abilities
- The drive to excel in an academic and training environment
- Capability to perform physical work, including standing for extended periods and lifting up to 25 pounds
- Strong command of the English language, both written and verbal
- Ability to maintain a safe working environment
