About the role
The TMS/FMS Business Analyst is a critical connector between transportation operations, customers, and technology, ensuring that our Transportation Management System (TMS) and Freight Management System (FMS) consistently translate business strategy into operational results. This role owns the functional integrity and business value of transportation platforms across truckload, LTL, drayage, intermodal, parcel, and brokerage operations. The core mandate is to design, configure, and continuously improve systems and processes so that shipments move with higher reliability, lower cost, and greater visibility for customers.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary business liaison for TMS/FMS initiatives, translating operational and customer needs into clear, measurable system requirements; facilitate alignment across Transportation Operations, Brokerage, Carrier Management, Customer Success, IT, and external customers to ensure that platform enhancements directly support service, cost, and scalability goals.
- Lead the full lifecycle of TMS/FMS changes, including gathering, analyzing, documenting, and validating business requirements for new implementations, feature enhancements, and process improvements; convert these requirements into configuration specifications, process flows, and acceptance criteria that can be executed by technical teams and vendors.
- Configure and administer core TMS/FMS functionality—such as order management, load planning and optimization, carrier selection, dispatch, freight rating, shipment tracking, appointment scheduling, freight audit and payment, and customer reporting—to support standardized yet flexible transportation workflows across multiple modes and customers.
- Partner with software developers and integration teams on connectivity projects (API, EDI, ERP, WMS, GPS, telematics, portals), ensuring data design, message flows, and exception handling support timely, accurate, and complete information exchange; lead User Acceptance Testing (UAT), regression testing, and production validation to secure stable deployments with minimal operational disruption.
- Analyze end-to-end transportation workflows and KPIs to identify opportunities for automation, cost reduction, and service improvement; design and implement process changes, dashboards, and reports that increase transportation visibility, support carrier and customer performance management, and enable continuous improvement across the 3PL network.
Requirements
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience in a transportation or 3PL environment.
- 3–5 years of hands-on experience supporting or implementing enterprise TMS/FMS platforms within a third-party logistics (3PL) or transportation-focused organization, with direct involvement in configuration, process design, and user support.
- Solid operational understanding of at least three of the following: truckload (TL), less-than-truckload (LTL), drayage, intermodal, parcel, and brokerage operations, including how loads are planned, tendered, tracked, and financially settled.
- Demonstrated experience in business analysis for technology-enabled processes, including requirements elicitation, process mapping, writing functional specifications or user stories, and supporting User Acceptance Testing in a structured manner.
- Practical experience configuring TMS/FMS modules such as order management, load planning/optimization, carrier selection, dispatch, freight rating, shipment tracking, appointment scheduling, and freight audit and payment, with a clear understanding of how configuration choices impact operations and customers.
Preferred Requirements
- 5+ years of progressive experience in TMS/FMS business analysis or product support roles within a 3PL, freight brokerage, or transportation carrier, including exposure to multi-site or network-level implementations.
- Direct experience with one or more leading enterprise TMS platforms (e.g., Oracle Transportation Management, Blue Yonder, SAP TM, MercuryGate, Manhattan, or similar) or specialized FMS platforms used in 3PL environments.
- Experience leading end-to-end TMS/FMS implementations, including solution design, configuration governance, test planning, cutover support, and post-implementation stabilization, preferably for complex or multi-customer environments.
- Hands-on involvement in EDI/API integration projects with carriers, customers, and internal systems (ERP, WMS, YMS, telematics), including exposure to common transportation document types (e.g., 204, 214, 210, 990, 997) and related exception handling.
- Prior responsibility for designing or maintaining transportation dashboards and operational reports (e.g., on-time performance, cost per mile, carrier performance, tender acceptance, dwell time), using BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or similar.
