About the role

Plans, organizes, implements, and delivers the instructional program in the content area of assignment at the state school for youth who have been adjudicated delinquent of felony offenses, assigned to a high security correctional facility, and have a wide variety of temperaments and specialized needs.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, prepares, and delivers instructional activities that facilitate an active learning environment.
  • Observes and evaluates youth performance and development; provides appropriate feedback on work; and encourages and monitors the progress of individual students.
  • Identifies the learning needs of students and interprets assessment information.
  • Selects different instructional resources and methods to meet the varying needs of youths.
  • Establishes and communicates clear objectives for all learning activities.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records of youth progress and development; and updates all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws and agency policies.
  • Provides educational services to potentially aggressive/combative youth in a correctional setting with a wide variety of temperaments (volatile, aggressive, suicidal) and specialized needs (chemically dependent, sexual offenders).
  • Treats youth with respect in all situations and the ability to react quickly and effectively to verbally and physically defuse hazardous, combative, volatile situations on an as needed basis.
  • Keeps up to date with developments in the subject area, teaching resources, and methods and makes relevant changes to instructional plans.
  • Ensures students obtain a general knowledge of the labor market information pertaining to the industry and occupations pertaining to the subject area and demonstrates for students how to locate and interpret the information.
  • Ensures students can accurately identify and demonstrate hard and soft skills necessary for obtaining and maintaining employment.
  • Provide opportunities for all students to earn relevant post-secondary credentials, including industry-based certification where applicable.
  • Maintain a current and accurate inventory of all program equipment, tools, and supplies; manage a well-organized safe program and classrooms.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with post-secondary/industry partners to provide appropriate school-based learning experiences and to ensure the program of study is informed by employer and industry needs.
  • Reports safety hazards and corrects hazards when possible.
  • Completes required documentation in the event of an accident/injury within requested time frames.
  • Performs a variety of related duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.
  • Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency attendance and leave policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and a valid Secondary Texas Teacher Certification in the specified subject assignment area. Must be highly qualified in all areas of teaching assignment.
  • Note: Any degree, diploma, high school equivalent, or course hours required to meet minimum qualifications must be from an accredited educational institution.
  • Pre-employment conditions require acceptable results from mandatory:
    • Pre-employment drug test
    • Finger printing and criminal records check
    • Fitness-for-Duty Assessment which may include both physical and behavior evaluations

  • Knowledge of state and federal education laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of subject matter to be taught.
  • Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Skill in analyzing.
  • Ability to see with or without visual aid.
  • Ability to hear with or without hearing aid.
  • Ability to perform tactile discernment.
  • Ability to Implement Texas Education Agency (TEA) education policies and procedures.
  • Ability to review and implement agency policies, procedures, and operating guidelines.
  • Ability to convey and interpret information to students.
  • Ability to lead discussions.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing with students, parents, administrators, and other professionals involved in the education of agency youth.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions, with possible occurrences of extreme heightened stress.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all stakeholders.
