About the Role

To help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible individuals. This position reports to the Building Principal, Assistant Principal, and/or Directors.

Responsibilities

  • Abide by the standards of conduct as defined by the Mississippi Educator Code of Ethics.
  • Plan, organize, and conduct a program of instruction based on the Mississippi Standards/Frameworks.
  • Assume custody of assigned pupils and ensure their safety and general welfare.
  • Participate in pre-school conferences and in-service training programs unless assigned school duty conflicts.
  • Perform extra-curricular duties assigned by the principal (e.g., room, hall, playground supervision).
  • Coordinate with other professional staff members, participate in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Maintain classes in session during school hours and not dismiss them without prior consent of the principal.
  • Be responsible for all school property and equipment entrusted to you.
  • Ensure student conduct conforms to school standards and district policies; maintain a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Organize and maintain accurate record-keeping, grading, and reporting for student activities, achievement, and attendance.
  • Make requests to the School Board through the principal and superintendent.
  • Be accountable to the principal and superintendent for teaching duties.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials; translate plans into learning experiences.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and modify instructional methods to fit individual needs, including students with special needs.
  • Provide lesson plans for at least two weeks in advance if terminating employment during the school year.
  • Promote a safe and conducive classroom environment for individualized and small group instruction.
  • Notify the principal or designee directly upon any anticipated absences, obtaining prior approval when required.
  • Encourage parental involvement and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
  • Abide by all reasonable rules and assignments set by the principal and administrative personnel.
  • Avoid doctrinal, sectarian, and denominational teaching.
  • Continue professional development by attending seminars, workshops, or conducting research.
  • Maintain cordial relationships with parents and keep them informed of student progress.
  • Support and enforce all Board of Trustees’ policies, procedures, and rules set by the Superintendent and principal.
  • Remain alert to hazards (e.g., obstructed walkways, unsafe equipment, unauthorized personnel).
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal, Assistant Principal, Director, Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent.

Requirements

  • Certified and licensed in accordance with state law and Mississippi Department of Education regulations.
  • Licensure and transcripts of credits must be on file in the Superintendent’s office.
  • Pass a criminal background check and current child abuse registry check (per Mississippi Code §37-9-17).
  • Satisfactory employment record.

  • Ability to develop lesson plans and instructional materials.
  • Experience in assessing student learning and adapting instruction to individual needs.
  • Strong communication and collaboration with students, parents, and staff.
  • Familiarity with Mississippi Standards/Frameworks and district policies.
  • Commitment to professional development and ethical standards.

Equipment

Standard classroom materials and equipment.

Travel Requirements

Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Physical and Mental Demands

Works in standard office and school building environments.

Terms of Employment

187 days annually with salary in accordance with the Administrative Salary Schedule as approved by the Harrison County School District.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with School Board Policies and Procedures.
