Title I Teacher Assistant

Position Purpose

The ideal Teaching Assistant is a dedicated individual who deeply cares about students and the quality of their school experience. Working under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, the primary goal of this role is to help students achieve tangible success in their learning outcomes by directly supporting classroom instruction and serving as a collaborative, supportive adult alongside certified teachers and school staff. By handling non-professional duties and providing focused instructional aid, the Teaching Assistant enables the educational team to optimize the learning environment and enhance the overall academic program.

Essential Job Functions

  • Instructional Support: Assists and guides students to reinforce reading, language arts, mathematics, and computer skills. Works with students individually or in small groups to reinforce learning outcomes.

  • Classroom Management: Assists with behavioral management to minimize disruptions, ensuring a safe, engaging, and "on-task" learning environment.

  • Student Supervision: Supervises students in non-instructional areas, including lunch programs, bus duty, playground duty, corridors, study halls, and field trips.

  • Assessment & Grading: Assists certified staff in the administration and correction of classroom exercises, tests, and assessments.

  • Materials & Prep: Constructs, copies, and distributes educational materials; assists in classroom preparations and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials.

  • School Support: Assists counseling or building administration as needed; assists with record-keeping procedures to document student learning and performance.

  • Safety & Compliance: Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures, and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Academic Proficiency: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide to assist students with core arithmetic operations. Ability to support reading and writing tasks.

  • Communication: Effective writing and verbal communication skills; ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisors.

  • Technical Skills: Ability to understand and use personal computers and software (e.g., Google Workspace) and standard office equipment like copiers.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals and maintain cooperative working relationships with students and staff.

  • Discretion: Strict ability to maintain confidentiality regarding students, employees, and sensitive information.

  • Adaptability: Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form and perform "other related duties" as assigned.

Physical and Mental Demands / Work Hazards

  • Works in standard office and school building environments.

  • Ability to work outdoors during student activities (recess, bus duty, field trips).

Qualification & Terms of Employment

  • Requirement: Must agree to become "Highly Qualified" upon hiring. (Certification options provided).

  • Less than 12-month contract-180 days

  • 5.9 hours per day/29.5 hours per week

  • Classification: Grade 6 on Classified Staff

  • Salary Matrix: Hourly Rate: $17.07-18.47 (based on experience).

  • An additional $1 per hour will be paid through referendum funds.
