About the Role

The welding technician is responsible for all Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) applications required to meet customer demand within the Conroe facility. This role involves demonstrating exceptional weld quality for thin wall stainless tube in all positions, interpreting dimensional drawings, preparing components, and ensuring fitment and joining per internal procedures for both internal and customer-approved designs. The technician will operate automated welding equipment and train other employees on automated processes.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and visually inspect all components, understanding dimensions and design requirements prior to welding for compliance with work order specifications.
  • Assemble fabricated designs prior to final welding to ensure correct components as called by the work order and tube/weld pipe completion in accordance with manufacturing procedures.
  • Assemble and tack weld fittings and special products using manual and/or automated welding techniques, then weld them complete in accordance with ASME BPVC weld procedures and customer-supplied specifications.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and set up welding units to comply with welding procedures, considering factors such as correct filler wire, compressed gas, and appropriate pressure settings.
  • Use 2D dimensional reading skills to interpret engineering or customer-supplied drawings and specifications.
  • Read measuring instruments including tape measures, rulers, calipers, and micrometers.
  • Verify protective shielding and restricted area signs are in place before welding; use Andon lights during welding processes.
  • Set up and safely operate the plasma-arc cutting torch in accordance with manufacturing procedures.
  • Perform material handling functions inside the weld cell for consumable parts, fittings, tubing, and other components.
  • Understand, promote, and work to meet OSHA and Crane safety practices.
  • Support the development of WPS & WPQR procedures as required.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a high school education.
  • Currently or previously maintained an ASME Section IX certification in GTAW for 316L stainless, or ability to demonstrate and pass certification during the interview weld examination.
  • Ability to ASME certify and weld in 1G-6G positions on ½ inch – 6 inch pipe.
  • Three or more years of experience with GTAW welding stainless steel, or completed equivalent technical school training.
  • Fabrication experience and ability to work from dimensional drawings and sketches.
  • Five or more years of welding experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Horizontal manual lathe and/or manual machining experience is a plus.
  • Basic computer skills (Excel, Word) and ability to communicate professionally via email.

Physical Demands

  • Required to stand for long periods of time.
  • Must have good balance and the ability to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Must be able to reach with hands and arms, balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to use various hand tools and good hand-eye coordination.
