The State of Connecticut, Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS) is seeking an English Instructor to join our team at Ella T Grasso Technical High School in Groton, CT.

To be considered, candidates must possess an active State of Connecticut Teaching Certificate in English (015 certification) or be eligible for certification in the subject area, including ARC candidates.

About Us

For over 100 years, CTECS has been the leading force in Career Technical Education (CTE) in Connecticut. The system operates 17 diploma-granting technical high schools, one technical education center, and two airframe mechanics and aircraft maintenance programs, providing a direct employment pipeline for high school students and adult learners.

Schedule

• First shift, full time (35 hours per week)
• Monday through Friday
• 10-month academic calendar (188 days per year)

Pay

Salary: VS01-VS02, derived from the State Vocational Federation of Teachers.

Responsibilities

A CTECS English Instructor is responsible for:

• Planning and delivering effective, differentiated instruction that meets the needs of all students, including implementing IEP and 504 accommodations.
• Fostering a positive and well-managed classroom environment.
• Engaging students through effective teaching and assessment practices.
• Collaborating with colleagues and families.
• Maintaining professionalism through ongoing reflection, professional development, policy compliance, confidentiality, and student safety.

Responsibility Area #1: Planning and Preparation

• Develop lesson plans with clear objectives, appropriate techniques, and differentiation to serve all learners.
• Demonstrate knowledge of English content and pedagogy for all high school English curricula.
• Understand and address the varied needs of each student.
• Collaborate with guidance personnel and support service educators to assist students with special programming, ensuring IEP and 504 accommodations/modifications are implemented.
• Set instructional goals and outcomes.
• Utilize varied instructional practices and resources.
• Design effective instructional learning opportunities and assessments.

• Develop mutual respect and rapport with students.
• Establish a culture for learning.
• Manage classroom procedures and student behavior positively.
• Organize physical space to maximize learning opportunities.

Responsibility Area #3: Instruction

• Communicate effectively with students.
• Use questioning and discussion techniques to engage students.
• Keep students intellectually engaged.
• Follow the scope and sequence of the approved CTECS instructional program and curriculum.
• Design instruction to meet the needs of all students through individual and small group settings.
• Utilize ongoing assessments to design clear and specific learning tasks.
• Demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness.

• Reflect on teaching practices.
• Maintain accurate records.
• Communicate effectively and on an ongoing basis with students and their families.
• Participate in building and district-level professional development and collaboration, including working with committees and departments.
• Engage in professional communities and demonstrate growth in professional craft.
• Adhere to the Connecticut Code of Professional Responsibility.
• Implement CTECS Board of Education and administrative policies, rules, regulations, and directives.
• Maintain a positive school community image that encourages ethical student behavior.
• Maintain confidentiality concerning personnel, student, and operational concerns.
• Report all cases of suspected child abuse to appropriate school personnel and authorities.

Requirements

• Active State of Connecticut Teaching Certificate in English (015 certification) or eligibility for certification in the subject area, including ARC candidates.
• Valid certificate issued by the Connecticut State Board of Education in accordance with Certification Regulations Concerning State Educator Certificates, Permits, and Authorizations, with a secondary school endorsement.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional experience related to teaching English.
• Experience with 21st-century standards-based lesson planning aligned to the CT Core Standards in English Language Arts.
• Experience with varied assessments to inform instruction and promote learning.
• Experience fostering and facilitating learning and classroom management.
• Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with others.
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Teaching or substitute teaching experience, demonstrating varied methods of lesson delivery, assessing student knowledge, and using educational technology.
• Involvement in student/community activities.
