About the role

The position involves assisting journeyman carpenters in various tasks related to concrete structures, including formwork, rebar installation, and concrete pouring. It also includes safety responsibilities and coordination with other trades.

Responsibilities

  • Use appropriate tools to measure, cut, assemble and install forms, rebar, embeds and anchor bolts.
  • Erect built-in-place forms or assemble and install prefabricated forms.
  • Insert spreaders and tie-rods between opposite pieces to maintain specific dimensions.
  • Anchor and brace forms to fixed objects using nails, bolts, anchor rods, steel cables, planks and timber.
  • Build wooden structures such as scaffold supports and frame shelters according to specifications.
  • Pour concrete into finished forms to specified textures; vibrate, level, smooth and shape surface of concrete; finish concrete surfaces to specifications.
  • Remove rough or defective spots from concrete surfaces using power grinder or chisel and hammer and patch holes with fresh concrete or epoxy compound.
  • Install all other items in accordance with the applicable plans and specifications.
  • Engage with your work team to ensure we achieve zero injuries.
  • Understand that no job is so important that your safety and that of your crew will be compromised.
  • Watch for hazards and report any concerns to your supervisor or safety professional.
  • Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor; participate in investigation process as needed.
  • Identify safety hazards you or other employees may be subject to and take all necessary corrective action to eliminate and/or mitigate hazards.
  • Respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices.
  • Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Use effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers and fractions rapidly and accurately.
  • Listen to co-workers suggestions, safety concerns, and recommendations giving full attention to what they are saying and take the time to understand the points being made, asking questions and providing feedback when appropriate.
  • Coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers on the job.
  • Participate in on-the-job training and mentoring opportunities with co-workers in your craft when provided.
  • Produce quality work, meeting requirements of plans, specifications and industry standards.
  • Learn to read and understand plans and specifications.
  • Visualize two dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
  • Assist in planning, installing and/or repairing structures in accordance with those plans and specifications.
  • Examine/inspect field conditions and identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost saving measures that arise or that may be encountered.
  • Take corrective actions as needed reporting any issues to your supervision.
  • If certified to operate equipment ensure that construction equipment is correctly operated, maintained, in good working order, and Daily Equipment Inspections are completed for equipment being utilized.
  • Comply with Company Code of Conduct and jobsite policies.

Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of experience working in the carpenter craft or similar craft as a helper or a combination of work experience and training.
  • A working knowledge of the carpenter craft, including fabrication and erection of forms, fabrication and placement of rebar, and placing, finishing and sealing concrete.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Absolutely required to have all necessary tools (see Carpenter Helper Tool List).
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

Skills

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
  • Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
  • Attention to detail and precision.

Pay

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
