Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in criminal justice, psychology, homeland security, or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of full time experience demonstrating the ability to analyze data and produce informational briefings.
  • Experience in using analytic tools, OSINT research databases, and/or synthesizing large amounts of information from multiple sources.
  • Must have, keep, and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five or more years of full time experience analyzing data and producing informational briefings.
  • Experience in higher education and or healthcare settings working with diverse communities.
  • An advanced degree in criminal justice, psychology, homeland security or related field.
  • Experience working with or supporting an Insider Risk Program or similar function.

Brief Description Of Duties

The Threat Analysis Specialist is responsible for leading efforts to implement a University-wide information/data and insight program for Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) at Stony Brook University. This person will be responsible for collecting, analyzing and synthesizing data from a variety of sources to provide tactical and strategic insights to provide the University with a high degree of situational awareness to manage risk. This person will track issues of importance and, in an actual crisis, provide timely information and analysis concerning the situation. This person will conduct in-depth analysis within ERM’s Insider Risk Program by identifying, assessing, and synthesizing indicators to detect potential insider threats and support timely, risk-informed mitigation actions. This person will partner with various internal teams to quickly and discreetly provide information to assist in the decision-making process to mitigate threats and inform response strategies for ERM and other key University partners.

The successful candidate will require excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills with ability to present to a wide range of audiences. Will have a demonstrated ability to work comfortably in a team environment as well as independently with minimal direction.

Data Collection and Analysis

Complex analysis to include the collection of raw, primary, and secondary data derived from various sources such as automated database systems, operational briefing reports, miscellaneous communications, internal and external automation systems, and other open/closed sources. Determine and assess the validity of information gathered and compile all pertinent information in a briefing to be shared with appropriate senior leadership.

Information Gathering and Reporting

Prepare and review descriptive and current informational reports and daily briefings for internal use as well as dissemination to senior leadership team members. Quickly and discreetly provide behavioral analysis and reporting to assist in the assessment, interventions and referrals as directed. Produce self-initiated strategic finished informational products for dissemination and executive awareness that may include manuals and white papers as needed. Prepare parts of more complex studies or reports that include dashboards and predictive data modeling to estimate the likeliness of future situations.

Risk Assessments, Insider Risk Program Operations and Training

Cultivate, and maintain collaborative working relationships with colleagues, subject-matter experts, policy committees, and law enforcement agencies, as appropriate, and leverage these relationships to share information of interest. Conduct risk assessments and prepare briefing reports for international and domestic travel. Assist with the design and delivery of risk assessment and threat awareness training programs. Provide analytical support on insider risk mitigation efforts and develop a programmatic standard and training. Support the day-to-day functions of the Insider Risk Program, including intake, triage, analyzing credible/viable risks to the university, making recommendations to mitigate identified risks. Analyze trends and patterns in insider risk data to inform proactive mitigation strategies. Help develop and deliver awareness initiatives focused on insider risk, ethical conduct, and institutional responsibilities. Promote understanding of how to recognize and report potential insider risk concerns. Track metrics such as case volume, types of risks, resolution timelines, and repeat issues and produce statistical reports to be shared with the Director of OTAM. Build partnerships with external agencies and remain current on policies, protocols and best practices related to research security, (e.g. NSPM-33, CHIPS and Science Act 2022) and insider risk programs. In conjunction with the Director of Threat Analysis and Management and various campus departments, conduct ongoing and annual reviews to identify potential threat trends to the campus community.
